Poland Seminary 38, St. V-M 14
Bulldogs' Wollet scores four TDs to overrun Irish

Poland capitalizes on St. V-M's mistakes in first half

By David Lee Morgan Jr.

POLAND TWP: St. Vincent-St. Mary knew Poland Seminary senior running back Luke Wollet was a special player.

But the Irish probably didn't know Wollet would do so many special things for the Bulldogs.

In a Division III, Region 9 playoff game Friday night, Wollet scored four touchdowns — three rushing and one receiving — as Poland defeated St. V-M 38-14.

Wollet had more receiving yards than rushing yards. He finished with four catches for 119 yards and rushed 25 times for 111 yards.

He also had an interception return in the fourth quarter for 40 yards.

''He's a good football player,'' St. V-M coach Dan Boarman said. ''He ran harder and he was a little faster than I saw on film.''

Poland coach Mark Brungard said: ''Luke is a three-year starter and he had his best week of practice this week.''

Wollet's play and St. V-M's mistakes were too much for the Irish to overcome. In the first half, St. V-M gave up the ball on three kickoffs and the Bulldogs capitalized twice.

''We have to be able to field kickoffs,'' Boarman said. ''I've never been involved in a game where we didn't field three kickoffs.''

Poland (9-2) opened the game with an onside kick and recovered it. The Bulldogs then drove down the field and took a 3-0 lead on a 21-yard field goal by Kyle Filicky with 8:43 left in the first quarter.

The Irish (6-5) came back and took the lead late in the quarter when junior quarterback Oliver Hildebrandt hit senior wide receiver Dominique Mitchell on a 74-yard touchdown pass to give the Irish a 7-3 lead with 3:23 left in the first quarter.

Poland went ahead 10-7 on an 8-yard run by Wollet with 1:41 left in the first quarter. The Bulldogs took a 17-7 lead midway through the second quarter on a 5-yard run by Wollet that was set up by an onside kick recovery by Poland.

Then, late in the second quarter, the Bulldogs scored on one of the more creative touchdowns anyone will ever see.

On fourth-and-goal at the 2, Poland quarterback Colin Reardon went under center. He then walked away from center as if he was going to the sideline for a timeout. But seconds later, the center snapped the ball to Wollet, who went in for the score.

That put the Bulldogs ahead 24-7 at halftime.

St. V-M opened the second half with more intensity than it showed in the first half as the Irish forced Poland to punt on its first possession of the third quarter.

St. V-M's line put pressure on Poland's punter, forcing a bad punt, and it gave the Irish excellent field possession.

St. V-M took over at Poland's 45. Two plays later, junior running back Mark Murphy scored on a 29-yard run to cut the Bulldogs' lead to 24-14, but it was St. V-M's final score of the game.

Murphy finished with 81 yards on 11 carries, Hildebrandt completed 7-of-20 passes for 137 yards and Mitchell caught three passes for 94 yards.

''It's disappointing because there were a lot of games we gave away this season,'' Boarman said. ''We just had too many turnovers all year.''

Poland will face Archbishop Hoban next weekend in the second round. Hoban defeated Parma Padua 14-11 Friday night at Hoban's Dowed Field.
