One of the most anticipated seasons in Kansas' storied history got off to a high-flying start.
Xavier Henry hit five 3-pointers and scored 27 points to set a school freshman record, and the top-ranked Jayhawks wore down overmatched Hofstra for a 101-65 victory Friday night.
Kansas is a favorite to win its second national title and played like it against the small-conference Pride, overcoming some occasional sloppy moments to win its 37th consecutive home opener and eighth straight season opener.
Sherron Collins added 23 points and Cole Aldrich had 11 points and eight rebounds, lifting the Jayhawks to their 42nd straight win at Allen Fieldhouse.
Hofstra put up a bit of a fight in its first game against a No. 1 team, piecing together a small rally to keep Kansas from running away midway through the first half. The Pride just couldn't keep up Kansas' depth and talent, hurt by early foul trouble and poor perimeter shooting.
Charles Jenkins had 23 points to lead Hofstra, which was 5-of-21 from 3-point range.
Henry, the marquee name in Bill Self's stellar recruiting class, stole the show early.
The smooth left-hander hit a 3-pointer on Kansas' first possession, added a how-did-he-get-that-high rebound slam for a three-point play and had eight points in the first 3 minutes.
Henry had 10 points in the first half and opened the second with another run of eight points in 3 minutes, including a 3-pointer and a two-handed dunk on the break. This time, he kept going, hitting a 3-pointer from the wing and pulling up for another to put Kansas up 61-34.
Henry hit 5-of-8 from 3-point range and was 8-for-12 overall to break the Kansas freshman debut record of 21 points, set by Norm Cook in 1973.
More men's Top 25
No. 2 Michigan State 97, Florida Gulf Coast 58 Durrell Summers scored 14 of his 17 points in the first half and Kalin Lucas scored 21 for host Michigan State. The Spartans (1-0) started sloppy and sluggish, but Summers' go-ahead dunk on an alley oop sparked a 17-4 run that put them in control. Anthony Banks led the Eagles (0-1) with 10 points.
No. 4 Kentucky 75, Morehead State 59 Kentucky freshman Eric Bledsoe scored 24 points while starting in place of John Wall, and the host Wildcats opened the John Calipari era with a win over Morehead State. Patrick Patterson added 20 points including his first career 3-pointer to go with 12 rebounds as Kentucky (1-0) pulled away in the second half. Kenneth Faried led Morehead State (0-1) with 17 points.
No. 5 Villanova 84, Fairleigh Dickinson 61 Corey Stokes scored 20 points, Corey Fisher added 13 and host Villanova overcame a sloppy first half. Star guard Scottie Reynolds managed just eight points on 2-of-10 shooting for the Wildcats (1-0). Reynolds had only two points in the first half as Villanova built a 35-34 lead at intermission. Stokes ignited the Wildcats with 17 points in the second half, including four 3-pointers and a three-point play. Terence Grier scored 17 points to lead Fairleigh Dickinson (0-1).

Kevin Menner led Northridge (0-1) with 18 points.
No. 9 Duke 96, UNC Greensboro 62 Kyle Singler scored 14 of his 20 points in the first half, and host Duke shrugged off the absence of two starters. Singler, the ACC's preseason player of the year, finished 9-of-15 from the field, and Jon Scheyer added 18 points for the Blue Devils (1-0). Duke shot 59.7 percent and used two huge first-half runs to extend its NCAA record home nonconference winning streak to 69.
No. 10 Tennessee 83, Austin Peay 54 Scotty Hopson scored 16 points and Cameron Tatum had 15 off the bench for host Tennessee. The Volunteers (1-0) are trying to return to coach Bruce Pearl's full-court pressure style of play, but were sloppy against the Governors (0-1). They were only 43.3 percent from the field in the first half before shooting 53.8 percent in the second half.
No. 12 Connecticut 75, William & Mary 66 Jerome Dyson scored 27 points and host Connecticut opened its season with a win. Dyson also had eight assists and four steals. Stanley Robinson added 17 points and freshman Alex Oriakhi had eight points and 10 rebounds for UConn (1-0).

Johnson got things going for the Tigers with three straight first-half 3s for an 18-4 lead from which the Blue Hose couldn't recover. Johnson finished with 12 points, and David Potter, Andre Young and Bryan Narcisse each hit two 3-pointers.
No. 25 Minnesota 87, Tennessee Tech 50 Lawrence Westbrook scored 22 points, and host Minnesota won its season opener. The senior guard keyed a 16-5 run to start the second half and help Minnesota pull away. After the run, the Gophers (1-0) led by at least 22 points the rest of the way.
