All-stars come out for a kill

District 3 coaches have chance to see seniors at best for one last time

BARBERTON: A senior all-star event is not about winning or losing. It is about the chance to put the uniform on one more time in high school.

On Friday night at Greynolds Floor at Barberton High School, volleyball players got the honor of playing one more time at the District 3 Volleyball Coaches Association All-Star Matches.

It was a night of mixed emotions, as players soaked in a chance to be with other top-notch athletes, but knew this was the final time they would put on their volleyball uniforms.

In the first match, the West No. 1 team swept the East No. 1 team, 3-0.

The West team, made up of all but one player from Medina County, was led by a dominant performance from Corrin Early.

The Cloverleaf senior, who had five aces and several nasty kills, admitted it was a bittersweet night playing one last time with teammates Laura McDermott and Megan McCarthy.

''It feels amazing to be together with the best kids from our county. It was fun,'' Early said. ''It is going to be hard not being with them any more.''

Nicole Wurstle of Buckeye said it was hard to realize this was her last high school match. She was happy to play one more time with teammates Kara Joyce and Marah Farage.

''It feels great to be in an all-star game and to play one last time. It was good to play one last time with them,'' Wurstle said.

Wadsworth coach Terri Mason, whose Grizzlies reached the Division I regional at Hudson, coached the East No. 1 squad. Though she was honored to be chosen to coach, Mason was thrilled for another reason: to coach Jenna Samsa one more time.

''It gives me great pleasure to coach her final match. It is a very sentimental night and it really gives it closure for me,'' Mason said.

The West won the first set 25-16; the second, 25-8; and the third, 25-19.

In the second game, the West No. 2 squad defeated East No. 2, 2-1. The West was coached by Jason Schellenberger of Medina.

East No. 2 coach Tricia Johnson of Archbishop Hoban, like Mason, was happy to get another opportunity to be with her star player, in her case, Krissy Sokol.

''When you get to coach a player like Krissy Sokol, who has been such a dominant player, it's a tough, really tough, situation knowing this is her last game. You just want her to go out and have fun,'' Johnson said.

The East played tough, losing the first match 25-22, winning the second 26-24, then losing the last of the three sets, 25-19.

Walsh Jesuit standouts Katie Meyer and Allison Foschia were forces in the games. The pair showed why the Warriors reached the Division II regional final before losing to Mentor Lake Catholic.

''Fosch and I have played together since freshman year and we played Junior Olympic volleyball together. It is kind of sad leaving her, because we have such great energy together,'' Meyer said.

The District 3 Coaches of the Year were announced. In Division I, Jim Vaughn of Cloverleaf received the honor, with Bri Indorf of Buckeye in Division II, Michaele Bennett of Manchester in Division III and Jim Noall of Lake Center Christian, who was the East No. 1 team coach, in Division IV.
