Boys soccer/Walsh Jesuit 4, St. Vincent-St. Mary 1
No time wasted in Warriors' win

Defending state champs score early, then keep pressure on rival Irish

By Nate Ulrich Beacon Journal sportswriter

The Walsh Jesuit boys soccer team didn't hesitate to reject any ideas that rival St. Vincent-St. Mary might have had about beating the Warriors.

Just 1 minute, 7 seconds into the game, the Warriors scored and never looked back en route to a 4-1 victory Tuesday night at St. Vincent-St. Mary's John Cistone Field. The defending Division II state champion Warriors improved their record to 3-2-4. The Irish fell to 4-3-3.

Senior midfielder Chris Barton, an Ohio State University recruit, took a shot from about 24 yards away that rolled into the bottom-right corner of the goal and gave the Warriors a 1-0 lead in the second minute.

''We said 'it would be nice to score early for a change and just kind of relax' because we've been in a real drought as far as scoring,'' Walsh coach John Kissner said.

''Finally, we had some nice combinations up front and made some good plays around the penalty box. We were able to score early and set the tone.''

Walsh extended its lead to 2-0 in the 17th minute, when senior forward Tom DeRoia took an assist from Barton, dribbled the ball to about 6 yards away from the goal and fired a shot into the lower-right corner of the net.

The Warriors scored again in the 49th minute, when the ball deflected off a St. V-M defender to Walsh junior midfielder Patrick Brennan, who kicked it into the lower-left corner of the net from about 8 yards away.

Irish senior forward Igor Ilibasic led several charges deep into Warriors' territory. Ilibasic earned the opportunity to take a penalty kick when he was pushed during one of his gutsy offensive attacks, but his shot ricocheted off the goal's left post in the 47th minute.

In the 70th minute, Ilibasic scored St. V-M's lone goal, his 11th of the season, and cut Walsh's lead to 3-1 when he took a line-drive shot from about 35 yards away that found the top-right corner of the net.

Senior Justin Mancine got an assist from Barton and scored a breakaway goal about one minute later to restore the Warriors' three-goal lead.

''It wasn't that far off from being a close game,'' Irish first-year coach John Stavros said. ''But the thing is, they finished and we didn't.''
