Indians report
Tribe acquires Jamey Carroll

Shapiro keeps it vague on which player goes to Rockies and when

By Sheldon Ocker
Beacon Journal sportswriter

General Manager Mark Shapiro's search for a utility infielder ended Saturday, when the Indians acquired Jamey Carroll from the Colorado Rockies for a player to be named.

Carroll is a 33-year-old veteran who has seen action with Montreal/Washington and the Rockies, compiling a .272 batting average with nine home runs and 112 RBI in 580 games (1,509 AB), having made his big-league debut in 2002.

''His defensive ability at second base and short plus his speed and experience will complement the guys we already have,'' Shapiro said.

Last season with the Rockies, Carroll appeared in 108 games: 60 at second base, 35 at third, 11 at shortstop and three in the outfield. He started 55 games, 49 at short. In 227 at-bats, he hit .225 with nine doubles, two homers and 22 RBI.

He has been a better hitter against lefties than righties, with a career average of .292 and a.263 average in 2007.

In the Rockies' postseason run to the World Series, Carroll went 0-for-2 with a walk.

''Our priorities for this spot were No.1, defense, No. 2 speed, and No. 3 offense,'' Shapiro said. ''Jamey fits the first two criteria very well, and he will hit well enough for the at-bats he's likely to get.''

Shapiro was vague about when he must turn a player over to the Rockies, saying only that it was some time during the season.

The acquisition of Carroll raises a question of what will happen to Josh Barfield, who began the 2007 season as the regular at second base but eventually ended up on the bench, giving way to Asdrubal Cabrera.

Shapiro was asked whether Barfield will start the 2008 season at Triple-A Buffalo?

''That will be addressed before spring training,'' Shapiro said.

Carroll's one-year contract includes a club option for 2009.

To make room on the Tribe's 40-man roster, right-hander J.D. Martin was designated for assignment.
