Sowers, Carmona, Lee
to bat in Reds games

CLEVELAND: Indians pitchers will have the opportunity to bat in the three-game set with the Reds in Cincinnati.

The spotlight will be on starters Jeremy Sowers, Fausto Carmona and Cliff Lee. In reality, Indians manager Eric Wedge is hoping that his pitchers come to the plate with a runner on base and less than two outs. Then they can bunt.

Wedge concedes to being slightly anxious about pitchers hitting, because there's always a chance one of them could get hurt.

''I'm a little nervous, but that's part of it with beautiful interleague play,'' said Wedge with a touch of sarcasm. ''Actually, pitchers hitting has become somewhat the norm, because we've done it so long.''

Pitchers have been prepping in batting practice the past couple of weeks. Relievers, who presumably don't pitch until relatively late in games and don't stay long, are limited to bunting during BP. Starters actually hack away.

A GO FOR JOE — Joe Borowski (strained triceps) threw off the mound Wednesday, and Wedge said, ''He looked good and he felt good.''

Borowski is scheduled to throw a simulated game, probably Friday. After that, he probably will go on a brief rehabilitation assignment, probably Monday at Lake County in Class A.

C.C. AS PH — Wedge said under the right circumstances, he would allow starter C.C. Sabathia to pinch hit for a pitcher during interleague play.

''It would have to be a situation that made sense,'' he said.

Such as? It likely would be relatively early in a game, when the manager might opt to save his usual pinch hitters for later; the opposing pitcher would have to be right-handed, and there could be no possibility of grounding into a double play.

FARM FACTS — Michael Aubrey lifted his average to .341 with two singles, as Buffalo defeated Pawtucket 6-5 in Class AAA. Ryan Mulhern doubled and singled twice, driving in two runs. . . . Steven Wright gave up only one earned run on four hits in five innings, but he yielded two unearned runs as Kinston lost to Wilmington 5-4 in Class A. . . . Roman Pena had three hits and three RBI, and Lucas Montero homered in Lake County's 7-4 win over West Virginia.
