Sowers on mound tonight against Reds
CLEVELAND: Left-handed starter Jeremy Sowers will be called up from Triple-A Buffalo to pitch tonight's game in Cincinnati against the Reds.
To make room for him, outfielder Jason Tyner will be designated for assignment, which means the Indians have 10 days to trade him, release him or get him through waivers and assign him to Triple-A.
Tyner was called up from Buffalo last Sunday. He received only two at-bats. Tyner has a track record of success in the big leagues, so the Tribe runs the risk of losing him.
TOO EARLY Not much bothered Aaron Laffey on Thursday, as he lowered his ERA to 1.35. But he wasn't thrilled about the game's noon start.
''That was a little different for me,'' he said. ''You get used to one o'clock games, and this felt a little awkward, getting up an hour earlier.''
OTHER STUFF The rotation's 441/3-inning scoreless string is the longest by Indians starters since 1948, when Bob Lemon, Gene Bearden, Sam Zoldak and Satchel Paige threw shutouts that added up to 47 scoreless innings. . . . According to Elias Sports Bureau, the last rotation to have a streak of more than 441/3 innings was the Baltimore Orioles' starting staff of Jim Palmer, Mike Cuellar, Dave McNally and Ross Grimsley, who threw 54 scoreless innings in 1974. . . . The sweep of the A's was the Tribe's second of the season. . . . Laffey has not allowed an earned run in 21 innings.
FARM FACTS John Drennen doubled and singled three times in Kinston's 4-3 loss to Wilmington in Class A. Beau Mills doubled, singled and drove in two runs. . . . Kelvin De La Cruz (3-2, 1.77 ERA) delivered six scoreless innings, allowing five hits, in Lake County's 5-0 win over West Virginia in Class A. Mark Thompson homered and doubled, driving in one run.
