New windup gives Byrd more control of the strike zone
CLEVELAND: Paul Byrd was significantly more effective in his last start, Wednesday night against the Detroit Tigers, when he gave up three runs (two let in by the bullpen) in six innings.
With the help of pitching coach Carl Willis, Byrd altered his windup, which tightened his command of the strike zone.
''I went down to the bullpen (between starts),'' Byrd said. ''Carl made a few changes. Now, I'm not putting my hands over my head. I think that helped me keep the ball down.''
Byrd will have to wait until after the All-Star Game to see if the change in his delivery was responsible for his improved control.
NOW PITCHING — Matt Ginter will be summoned from Buffalo to start tonight's game. At Triple-A, Ginter has a 6-6 record and 4.14 ERA in 18 appearances, 17 starts.
Why Ginter? ''He's a veteran guy,'' manager Eric Wedge said. ''And he had enough days off after his last start to make it work for us.''
THE NEXT MOVES — Fausto Carmona (strained hip) suffered no ill effects from throwing a simulated game on Wednesday, so he will begin a rehabilitation assignment Monday at Lake County.
Carmona will make at least two minor-league starts before he is activated from the disabled list.
Victor Martinez (elbow surgery) has progressed to the point where he will begin to play catch next week. He probably will not return to the active roster until sometime in August.
MINOR DEAL — The Tribe traded Triple-A first baseman Ryan Mulhern and right-hander Dan Reichert to the Pittsburgh Pirates for cash. Mulhern was batting .250 with seven homers and 26 RBI in 58 games; Reichert was 1-3 with a 4.40 ERA in eight starts.
FARM FACTS — Frank Hermann (0-2, 1.38 ERA) gave up one unearned run and three hits in six innings, but Buffalo lost 2-0 to Louisville. . . . Jared Goedert homered, singled and drove in four runs, and Niuman Romero homered and doubled, driving in two runs, as Kinston beat Lynchburg 9-2. . . . Ryan Miller (7-4, 2.47 ERA) gave up two runs in 42/3 innings in Lake County's 2-1 loss to Hickory. . . . Kevin Fontanez had four hits and two RBI, as the Gulf Coast League Indians outlasted the Blue Jays 14-13. Angel Rodriguez, Rafael Vera and John Allman each had three hits.
