CLEVELAND: Victor Martinez (elbow surgery) played catch on Monday and reported no ill effects.
''He's caught a couple of bullpens,'' manager Eric Wedge said. ''He didn't throw the ball back, but catching bullpens helps keep his legs in shape.''
Wedge wants to see Martinez spend more of the day in the clubhouse, something that many players on the DL find uncomfortable, because they are unable to play.
''I want him to come around,'' the manager said. ''He's one of the leaders on the club. I know it's tough for guys on the DL. They go crazy watching baseball and not being able to play it.''
ON LEAVE — Travis Hafner, on the DL with weakness in his right shoulder, left the team on a family matter in North Dakota.
''He went there on Friday,'' Wedge said. ''I'm not sure when he'll be back.''
TIGER TROUBLES — Bullpen problems have struck the Tigers.
After struggling for a while, Todd Jones was removed as the team's closer on Sunday. But Fernando Rodney had to throw 40 pitches in the finale of the series against the White Sox and was unavailable Monday night.
Moreover, Joel Zumaya reported pain in his triceps on Sunday, forcing him out of the bullpen mix Monday night and maybe beyond. All of this put Jones back in the saddle as closer.
FARM FACTS — Zach Jackson (2-0, 1.08 ERA) threw five scoreless innings, allowing two hits, as Buffalo blanked Charlotte 5-0. Morgan Ensberg hit his eighth home run, a grand slam. . . . Beau Mills hit his 16th homer of the year and drove in two runs, as Kinston defeated Wilmington 4-3. . . . Matthew Brown homered, doubled, singled and drove in six runs in Lake County's 7-3 win over West Virginia. . . . Jeremie Tice had two hits and two RBI, and Lonnie Chisenhall had two hits and one RBI, as Mahoning Valley beat Jamestown 9-4.
