Indians notes: Wedge gives Sizemore a 'mental break' day off

ST. PETERSBURG, FLA.: Seldom does Grady Sizemore get a day off, but Franklin Gutierrez took his place in center field and at the top of the Indians lineup Wednesday afternoon in the 10-7 loss to the Tampa Bay Rays.

''Grady has had a lot to handle this year,'' manager Eric Wedge said. ''I thought I'd give him a little mental break. Believe me, he did not want to sit on the bench today.''

Sizemore has started 109 of 113 games, 105 in center field, four at designated hitter.

Gutierrez is no stranger to the leadoff spot, where he has batted frequently at Triple-A.

''I like it there,'' he said. ''It's comfortable for me.''

ROSTER MOVES — The Indians made two roster moves after the game Wednesday afternoon. They called up pitchers Anthony Reyes and Brendan Donnelly from Triple-A Buffalo and optioned pitcher Tom Mastny to Buffalo. They also put starting pitcher Matt Ginter on the disabled list.

Reyes, who was acquired from the St. Louis Cardinals in July, will start Friday against the Toronto Blue Jays.

Donnelly, a veteran reliever who was recovering from Tommy John elbow surgery, will be in the bullpen.

NEW ON THE TUBE — Wedge watched video of Travis Hafner (right shoulder weakness) taking swings Tuesday in Cleveland.

It was the first time Hafner had hit off a tee, which Wedge called ''a significant step.''

Head trainer Lonnie Soloff and hitting coach Derek Shelton will return today to Cleveland, Soloff to administer a strength test to Hafner and Shelton to throw soft toss. They will rejoin the team Friday in Toronto.

HARD LESSON — Rays center fielder B.J. Upton was on the bench when the game started, having been benched by manager Joe Maddon for his failure to run hard to first on a ground ball Tuesday night.

FARM FACTS — Jeanmar Gomez gave up one run and seven hits in six innings, but Kinston lost 4-3 to Myrtle Beach in Class A. Niuman Romero had three hits. . . . Chris Jones (3-2, 2.61 ERA) delivered six scoreless innings, allowing one hit and two walks, as the Gulf Coast League Indians blanked the Yankees 3-0.
