LaPorta almost ready to play for Aeros again

DETROIT: When Matt LaPorta returned from the Olympics, the Indians sent him to the Cleveland Clinic to make sure he had no residual effects from the concussion he suffered when he was hit in the head by a pitch in a game against China.

After being examined by two specialists, head trainer Lonnie Soloff reported that LaPorta had been cleared to resume baseball activity starting today with the Aeros.

''He will take batting practice and field balls in the outfield,'' Soloff said. ''If he has no symptoms, he will start the game Friday night.''

HAFNER BACK ON TRACK — Although Travis Hafner's ''rehab pace has slowed a little,'' according to Soloff, he has had no real setback in recovering from weakness in his right rotator cuff.

''He thought he could use more time to develop his endurance by working in the batting cage rather than at DH,'' Soloff said. ''He did that yesterday and felt good. He was going to do the same today with a goal of being the DH tomorrow at [Triple-A] Buffalo.''

Hafner experienced soreness in the shoulder, but Soloff said that was nothing more than normal stiffness for an athlete who has been sidelined for many weeks.

''The soreness is nothing that concerns us,'' he said. ''We're taking our lead as far as what Travis needs to do. Our goal is that at the end of the season, Travis and the organization can enter the offseason with his shoulder injury behind him.''

For that to happen, Hafner needs to play.

OTHER REHAB NEWS — Victor Martinez (elbow surgery) and Josh Barfield (finger surgery) continue to play at Buffalo with no ill effects.

''Victor has no issues,'' Soloff said. ''Josh also is doing well.''

According to manager Eric Wedge, ''There's still a chance that Victor will be up here before September. The other two guys (Hafner, Barfield) won't be here until after Sept. 1.''

FARM FACTS — Ryan Morris (9-5, 3.50 ERA) pitched five hitless innings, as Lake County beat Hagerstown 8-1 in Class A. Juan Valdes homered and singled, driving in five runs. . . . Lonnie Chisenall hit his fifth home run of the season, driving in one run in Mahoning Valley's 8-7 win over Batavia in Class A. . . . Adam Abraham hit his fifth homer of the season, driving in three runs, and the Gulf Coast League Indians routed the Blue Jays 12-3.
