Terrible pitching continues

MESA, ARIZ.: Anthony Reyes continued the Indians' string of horrid starting pitching Thursday, giving up seven runs (six earned) and six hits in just two innings, and the Chicago Cubs scored a run in the ninth to win 9-8 at HoHoKam Park.

It was the Tribe's final game of the spring in Arizona, and players obviously are eager to start the regular season after a lengthy training camp that lasted a week longer than usual.

Reyes had pitched well until Thursday, giving up just one run and seven hits in 12 innings. He struggled through the second, when 10 Cubs batters came to the plate, and he allowed six runs and four hits, including a three-run triple by Koyie Hill.

There were mitigating circumstances in that second baseman Asdrubal Cabrera made one error, and shortstop Jhonny Peralta committed another.

In the past three games, starters Scott Lewis, Cliff Lee and Reyes have given up 23 earned runs and 27 hits (including seven homers) in 102/3 innings.

Tribe bats weren't silent, as Ryan Garko and Shin-Soo Choo hit their first home runs of the exhibition season and Andy Marte, pinch hitting for Reyes, hit his second.

Preliminary weather forecasts from three Internet sites for the home opener April 10: Intellicast says 51 degrees and showers; the Weather Channel predicts 51 degrees and a 60 percent chance of showers; Accuweather forecasts 57 degrees and a passing morning shower.

Traveling men

In addition to Lewis making a preparatory start against a minor-league team in Arizona on Sunday, Reyes will go to North Carolina and start a Class A game Tuesday. Lewis makes his first regular-season start in the home opener on April 10, and Reyes will make his 2008 debut two days later.

Marching onward

The Indians travel to Houston to play the Astros tonight. Fausto Carmona will start against Brian Moehler. Rafael Betancourt, Jensen Lewis and Rafael Perez also are scheduled to pitch for the Indians.

Let's pray that the bad pitching doesn't carry over into the regular season. Not pretty!

We are going to have to hit early in the game to keep games close. Although it is yet to be seen on the field this year, the Tribe bullpen could be its savior.

I have a feeling the Tribe will have a tough time getting Kerry Wood in a game when they are losing 7 to 3 going into the 8th inning .

Let's hope that the atmospheric conditions in Arizona had a lot to do with the miserable pitching. If not, the Indians could be in a world of hurt.
