The Indians acquired Winston Abreu from the Tampa Bay Rays today for a minor-league pitcher and cash.
Abreu, who will wear No. 36, will be added to the roster in the next few days.
The Indians sent right-hander John Meloan to the Rays.
Abreu, 32, whom the Rays signed to a non-roster invitation to spring training on Feb. 4, has spent most of the 2009 season at Triple-A Durham, where he went 3-0 with 10 saves and a 1.41 ERA. He walked 10 and struck out 49 in 32 innings in 23 appearances.
Abreu, a 6-foot-2, 170-pound right-hander, spent the 2008 season pitching for the Chiba Lotte Marines of the Japanese Pacific League.
Meloan was 0-0 with a save and a 5.52 ERA at Triple-A Columbus.
In the past week, the Indians have added Chris Perez and Jose Veras in trades to bolster what has been a weak bullpen.

yawn. . .
3 starters wouldn't hurt either.
how about three starters, four hitters and a third baseman. Also, add a real manager and front office.
Oh yeah, I forgot, the Dolans shop at Gabriel Brothers, not Dillards.
He pitched where in 08 ?
More of the same!
Too little, too late I'm afraid.
Why don't they just bring Ernie Camacho back and be done with it?
Who cares End the war in Iraq and Afghanistan
Hopefully the manager and the pitching coach are the next to be traded!
Why bother--weren't there some dirty diapers to be had. what was the point of this?
The only reason I bother to check ANY story on the Tribe this year is to see whether or not Mr. Dolan has come out of his Rip VanWinkle-like seven year sleep and FINALLY decided to fire Shapiro, Wedge, Shelton, Willis, and Skinner. That not happening... I could care less about what that miserable bunch of misfits does.
Hey ya'll, come down and claim Doug Davis from us here in Arizona. We ain't going anywhere anyway, and they are looking to trade him. He is a starter; era around 3.25, and pitches well from the stretch. Plus, he's a lefty. Sorry, but we suck too, so my favorite two teams don't give me much to cheer for. Hey, we'll throw in this wannabe manager too if you want. That and a six pack of Bud!
When will Dolan learn that you get what you pay for? Why not take a good hard look at the common denominators (Wedge and Company) and start by cleaning house there instead of continuing to shop for players at the bargain basement?
Ouch~ i can't relate.. Anyways, about shopping, a big thanks for the technology! I can save a lot of time and effort walking at the mall, finding what I need and want to buy. I just have to search what I want to shop, compare their prices according to my budget and have it delivered at my door. You may want to check this out http://www.wwhow.com/
So we traded a 34 year old vet for a couple of BP prospects. Then traded a 24 year old BP prospect for a 32 year old vet who played in Japan last year? Does this make snese to anyone other then Shapiro.
