Indians trim 3 from 40-man roster

By Sheldon Ocker
Beacon Journal sports writer

The Indians made three adjustments to their 40-man roster Friday, trimming it to 33 players.

Left-handed reliever Mike Gosling, left-handed starter Scott Lewis and infielder Niuman Romero were outrighted to Triple-A. Lewis began the season in the Tribe's rotation but spent much of the saason on the disabled list. Gosling and Romero both spent part of the season with the Indians.

Because Jake Westbrook and Anthony Reyes are on the 60-day disabled list, they do not count against the 40-man roster.

To this day I cannot figure out what direction the Indians mgmt. wants to go. It seems like every time they have a good player who puts together a couple of good seasons, they trade him before his contract is up. Do the Indians want a chance to go to the playoffs again or are they just grooming players for other teams? Look at the players they have had in the past that they traded. CC Sabathia, Casey Blake, Victor Martinez, Cliff Lee and others in the past. Somebody please tell me if they really know. Thanks

Can't figure out that Indians are basically a farm team for the big money clubs? The Dolans are a joke.

Why don't we send the aeros to cleveland and the indians to akron? That may be a step in the right direction. Couldn't hurt at this point.

Every championship team seems to have 2-3 veteran stars on it, to set the pace and the tempo. Something the Indians, under current ownership, will never have. Essentially, as was stated above, the Indians are a farm team for the moneyed franchises.
And, it's not the market size. Minnesota signed both Mauer and Morneau to long-term deals, even though they're small-market. Not the economy, either. Just look at Detroit.
It's the Dolans.

Kenyon,

Minnesota has NOT signed Mauer to a long-term contract. He's a free agent after the season. He may sign, but hasn't yet.

Indians signed Hafner, Westbrook, and others. Heck, Shapiro got CC to agree to an extension. People love to ignore that CC should have been a free agent after the 2006 season. Shapiro got him to sign a 2 year deal.

Were the Westbrook and Hafner signing bad? In hidnsight yes, but at the time they looked ok. Westbrook one still could be if Jake can stay healthy this year and net us a prospect or two. He was off to a great start in 2008 before the injury.

It's not 'the Dolans' either. Detroit is FAR and away a bigger market than Cleveland. Heck, even Minnesota has a larger metro area than Cleveland. And there are only 3 cities that have ML baseball teams that have seen their metro areas DECREASE in size since 2000.....and Cleveland is one of them (along with Pittsburgh and Detroit). And we've decreased 3 times as much as Detroit.

It IS the economy and the size of the Cleveland market that is hurting us.

Look at Minnesota. We actually had a LARGER payroll than them this past year. Sux that our players couldn't step up (thanks to the TERRIBLE manager we had), but the Dolans are spending money.

In fact, our payroll last year on opening day was larger than half the teams in baseball including the Twins, Rockies, and Cardinals who all made the playoffs.
