INDIANS NOTEBOOK Slumping Martinez can look to off days
CHICAGO: Victor Martinez has been in a slump for five weeks, and he looks like a man who needs a rest.
Since July 1, Martinez is batting .239 with four homers and 17 RBI. Tuesday night, a ninth-inning pitch down the middle bounced off his glove for a passed ball, and he and Ryan Garko couldn't decide who should catch a pop fly in foul territory, and it fell to the ground, prolonging the game.
''I've tried to break up some of those long stretches'' of games, manager Eric Wedge said Wednesday. ''I think Victor is OK. He's done such a good job for us all around. He's cooled off a little bit, but I see things that make me believe he's headed in the other direction in a positive way.''
Nevertheless, Wedge is counting the off days that might help Martinez get a second wind.
''In the next week or eight days, we have three off days,'' Wedge said.
HE'S THE MAN Wedge has no problem recognizing Barry Bonds as the all-time home run champ.
''The guy is a great player, and it's a great accomplishment; there's no denying that,'' said the manager of Bonds passing Henry Aaron's mark of 755 on Tuesday night.
LINEUP SHUFFLE Asdrubal Cabrera made his big-league debut Wednesday night as the starter at second base, batting ninth.
''We'll see how things go,'' Wedge said. ''But we'll probably see him get in a little more'' than Mike Rouse got in.
In addition, Ryan Garko moved from the middle of the lineup to eighth, partly because he was 1-for-7 against Jon Garland.
''Somebody has to hit there,'' Wedge said.
FARM FACTS Matt Whitney hit his seventh home run for Kinston and 23rd of the season (the other 16 were at Lake County), but Myrtle Beach gained an 8-7 win. Whitney drove in two runs, giving him 26 for Kinston and 90 this season. Joshua Rodriguez also homered and singled. Sheldon Ocker
