Indians report
Hafner's knee status pending

Tribe designated hitter to get examined today. Team claims infielder

By Sheldon Ocker Beacon Journal sportswriter

CHICAGO: The status of Travis Hafner won't be known until at least today, when he is examined by Indians team orthopedist Dr. Mark Schickendantz.

Hafner did not bat in the sixth inning of Wednesday night's game and sat out Thursday night's game with tightness in his left knee.

''We have to allow him to work on it today,'' manager Eric Wedge said. ''I still hold out hope that we might see him tomorrow. A doctor here looked at him, but it's too early to tell (if the injury is serious).''

Hafner suffered the injury Tuesday night, when he slid into second running out a double.

Victor Martinez took over as the designated hitter, and Kelly Shoppach spelled Martinez behind the plate.

The Tribe also made a roster move, claiming utility infielder Chris Gomez off the waiver wire from the Orioles.

Gomez, 36, batted .302 with 10 doubles, one home run and 16 RBI in 169 at-bats. He started at all four infield positions, including 18 at third, 10 at shortstop, nine at first and five at second.

He has a .261 career average over 15 seasons with Detroit, San Diego, Tampa Bay, Minnesota, Toronto and Baltimore.

He is expected to report to the Tribe today. Aaron Laffey was optioned back to Buffalo after his start Thursday night to make room for him, because with three off days in the next 11 days, no fifth starter will be needed for two weeks.

''Gomez has great versatility,'' Assistant General Manager Chris Antonetti said. ''He gives Eric the chance to use him in a variety of situations.''

Added Wedge, ''Gomez is a veteran guy with lots of experience. And having another (utility) guy should help us, like if we need a pinch runner late in a game.''

For at least a couple of weeks, the Indians will have two utility infielders. Asdrubal Cabrera, called up from Buffalo earlier this week, will stay. noweb
