Betancourt's cramp on mound not serious
ANAHEIM, CALIF.: When Howie Kendrick of the Los Angeles Angels hit a ninth-inning bouncer past the mound to Indians second baseman Asdrubal Cabrera on Friday night, reliever Rafael Betancourt seemed to slip on the mound and come up limping.
He finished the inning, but gave up the winning run in the 10th in the Tribe's 3-2 loss.
''I jumped from the mound, and my (upper) left leg felt like it cramped,'' Betancourt said Saturday. ''But it was fine. I didn't have any treatment, just came out the next inning and pitched.''
Manager Eric Wedge confirmed that Betancourt did not suffer a disabling injury, but he added, ''It definitely got our attention, though.''
BAD MOVE The Indians needed all the chances they could get Friday night, so it was disheartening to their cause when Cabrera singled to start the eighth and got picked off by the catcher.
''Things like that happen to young players,'' Wedge said. ''You hope they learn from it, and it doesn't happen again.''
Wedge talked to Cabrera about the play.
TRIBE GETS A BREAK Chone Figgins was not in the lineup Saturday night after scoring all three Angel runs the previous night.
''He give us fits, and not just this year,'' Wedge said. ''He sprays the ball all over the field; he makes things happen. He's a disruption.''
In his career, Figgins is batting .336 with 13 RBI in 113 at-bats against the Tribe. This year, his average is .357.
THE LONG LOOK Wedge confirmed that as the rotation is constructed, C.C. Sabathia would start the last game of the season in Kansas City.
However, if the Indians have a spot in the playoffs locked up earlier, another pitcher could take that start, enabling Sabathia to start twice in the American League Division Series.
Fausto Carmona also should be able to make two starts.
FARM FACTS Jose Constanza got two hits and drove in two runs, but Kinston lost 5-3 to Salem, which took a 2-1 lead in the first round of the Carolina League playoffs in Class A.
Sung-wei Tseng started for Kinston and gave up three runs and four hits in three innings. Sheldon Ocker
