Mr. Ocker:
I see a real problem with the approach of David Dellucci coming off the DL. Is there an outfielder on the Indians' roster who doesn't deserve to be playing ahead of Dellucci?
If I'm not mistaken, Dellucci has a three-year contract, so unless the Indians are willing to eat it, they have to make room on the roster.
Geoffrey KleinNaples, Fla.Dear Geoffrey:
The scourge of Dellucci is unlikely to destroy the team. You act as if he's carrying a lethal virus that will sweep through the clubhouse if he puts on his uniform.
You forgot about September call-ups. Nobody got sent down to make room for David Dellucci, whose leg is not yet strong enough to play the outfield. He will be a pinch hitter for the rest of the month.
If he recovers sufficiently from hamstring surgery by Sept. 30, maybe he will make the postseason roster, but that's probably a long shot.
Sheldon Ocker Sheldon:
So this is the city that set the record for sellouts in major-league baseball. There is a young, dynamic team that includes some of the most exciting players in the majors: Grady, Casey, Hafner, Barfield, C.C. and Fausto.
They are in the midst of a hot pennant race. Where the hell are the Indians fans? I am a relocated, lifelong Red Sox fan, but the Tribe is one of the teams I watch (cable and MLB.TV) and root for when they are not playing the Bosox.
I know that I am not the brightest bulb in the pack, but I don't understand it. If this team can't draw fans, what team will?
Steve Manganiello Dear Steve:
Attendance just doesn't work that way. When the results of the previous season combined with moves over the winter don't trigger rising expectations, fans don't show up the next year.
I don't know why they don't respond more quickly to a change in the club's fortunes, but that's the way it usually works. Attendance at Jacobs Field began to increase after the All-Star break, but the real benefit of the 2007 pennant run won't show up until 2008.
S.O. Sheldon:
It's all about the bandwagon, and it has been that way since the Red Sox won the Series in '04. I went to a game in '05 and saw too many freshly bought Manny Ramirez jerseys or new hats.
Think about this: How many Rice, Yaz, Garciaparra, Vaughn and Fisk jerseys do you see when you walk around the Jake? Exactly. None. It's the bandwagon man. Go Tribe!
Brandon Towne Dear Brandon:
Whatever you're talking about, I agree. Just don't throw me into a crowd of walking jerseys.
S.O.
