• The Detroit Tigers signed Jose Valverde to a one-year deal last week, possibly bringing an end to the unsettlement at the end of Jim Leyland’s bullpen. After Valverde fell apart during the postseason in October, the Tigers opted not to bring him back in the offseason. Instead, they pinned their hopes on Bruce Rondon and his lightning-quick fastball. He showed in spring training the speed was there, but he couldn’t find the strike zone enough. Lefty Phil Coke took over but hasn’t been superb either. Valverde finally returned to the Tigers, and Leyland immediately named him the closer. Rondon is in Detroit as well but gave up a game-tying home run against the Royals in his first appearance.
• The Tigers are hoping those are the only question marks surrounding their pitching staff. Ace Justin Verlander left Thursday’s game with what’s being called a blister on the thumb of his throwing hand. Verlander said it had developed in his last start and doesn’t want it to become something that affects multiple outings. He’s considered day-to-day.
• The Indians aren’t without pitching injuries either. Carlos Carrasco took a line drive off his left elbow and appeared to be in serious pain. It’s being called a deep bruise, and he is listed as day-to-day. Carrasco was suspended for eight games this year for intentionally hitting Kevin Youkilis. This time, Carrasco is on the other end of a bean ball.
• Anthony Bosch, the biochemist linked to the biogenesis case involving MLB players such as Alex Rodriguez and Ryan Braun, could be in hotter water than he already is. Documents obtained by ESPN’s Outside The Lines indicate Bosch used forged signatures of doctors on the prescriptions that were being filled for his clients. According to the documents, the drugs were prescribed to Bosch’s friends and associates and then delivered to professional athletes in order to avoid a paper trial. Per Outside the Lines, multiple prescriptions bear the signature of Dr. Daniel Carpman, who denies signing the forms, among other infractions.
