CHICAGO: Asdrubal Cabrera missed Sunday’s game in Houston after jamming his left wrist trying to break his fall down the dugout steps.
He missed Wednesday’s game with a slight quad strain sustained Monday night when he stole second in the eighth inning against the Chicago White Sox.
“We’ll take advantage of the miserable weather and have him sit out today,” Indians manager Terry Francona said. “Then he’ll have another day with tomorrow’s off day.”
ROSTER MOVE — Lou Marson (strained neck) was activated from the disabled list, and Yan Gomes was optioned to Columbus.
“To his credit, Gomes understood,” said Francona, alluding to the fact that Gomes would benefit more by playing every day at Triple-A than sitting on the bench in the big leagues.
“The day you send a guy down is not the best day to talk about these things, but he was really good about it,” Francona said. “It’s hard enough to be a backup; for a guy who doesn’t have much experience, it’s really hard.”
The Tribe sees Gomes as a future No. 1 catcher.
SIDE TRIP — Michael Bourn was scheduled to return to Cleveland and have five stitches removed from his right index finger. Bourn can come off the disabled list Tuesday at the earliest.
NIEVE RETURNS — Reliever Fernando Nieve, designated for assignment on Monday, cleared waivers and has been outrighted to Triple-A Columbus.
