Cleveland Indians notebook: Pennant race, lack of sleep OK with Terry Francona

CLEVELAND: Manager Terry Francona has spoken before about being sleep-deprived during the season.

Does it get worse when his team is in a pennant race?

“I find myself waking up in the middle of the night and I’m wide awake, all revved up,” he said Friday. “Then I’ll fall back asleep and when I get up again I’m tired. But that’s not a bad thing.”

BULLPEN STATS — Justin Masterson threw a 33-pitch bullpen Friday and seemed none the worse for wear.

“He really got after it,” Francona said. “We’ll see how he feels [today], then we’ll sit down with him and the medical people and do what we need to do. The good thing is he threw the ball well.”

Masterson hasn’t pitched since Sept. 2 because of a strained oblique.

TRIVIA PURSUIT — Ubaldo Jimenez has a 2.45 ERA in his past 21 starts, dating to May 27, which is the second-lowest ERA in the American League over that span.
