Indians’ Michael Brantley undergoes surgery for sports hernia

By Sheldon Ocker
Beacon Journal sports writer

Indians center fielder Michael Brantley underwent surgery Thursday to repair a sports hernia on the left side of his abdominal wall.

The 24-minute procedure was performed by Dr. William Meyers in Philadelphia.

Recovery time is expected to be three to six weeks, and Brantley will begin the rehab process at his home in Florida. Brantley’s own winter strength and conditioning program, which he likes to begin in November, is unlikely to be delayed, nor is he likely to be restricted in his activities.

In other Indians news, Shin-Soo Choo will be the club’s nominee for the prestigious Hank Aaron Award, emblematic of the top offensive performer in each league.

A panel of 30 hall of fame players, plus fans, will vote for the winners. Fans can exercise their vote through Oct, 16 by logging onto MLB.com or Indians.com.
