ANAHEIM, CALIF.: Corey Kluber’s throwing program has advanced to the stage where he is playing long toss without taping his sprained right middle finger.
“He threw from 90 feet today and he’ll go farther next time [120 feet],” Indians manager Terry Francona said. “He’s kind of flying through this.’’
However, Kluber isn’t likely to rejoin the rotation until September.
Brett Myers (elbow inflammation) reported no ill effects from throwing a simulated game.
“It’s getting to the point where he’s getting pretty antsy,” Francona said. “The good part is that he feels good. But he’s missed more time than if he went through an entire offseason. He has to go through the process.”
DELAYED NEWS — Francona and pitching coach Mickey Callaway altered the rotation. Zach McAllister started Monday night, Danny Salazar will start tonight, and Justin Masterson will throw Wednesday in the final game of the series against the Angels. The reason: to give Salazar a little more time between starts.
“When we can do that,” Francona said, “it seems to make sense.”
The decision was made days ago, but inadvertently nobody told the media.
“We did it the other day, and I didn’t check,” Francona said. “I just assumed that Mickey told Court [coordinator of baseball information Court Berry-Tripp]. We didn’t do this today.”
FOUL JUDGMENT — Jason Kipnis swung and missed strike three in the first inning Sunday then began arguing with umpire Mike DiMuro, insisting he foul-tipped the pitch in the dirt.
Francona headed for the plate to take up Kipnis’ cause but to no avail, even though DiMuro strongly indicated that he blew the call.
“He told me, ‘You’re making a good point, but I can’t change it,.’ ” Francona said. “I said that I know that, but there’s a huge ball mark in the dirt where the ball hit.”
