Getting a three-game sweep is noteworthy, but Mike Aviles had a different take on Sunday’s 6-0 Indians win.
‘‘It’s not so much the sweep,’’ Aviles said. ‘‘We played a clean game. We need to do that when the pitching is giving us a chance to win.’’
A “clean’’ game is something that’s been hard to come by lately. Arguably, the Tribe lost two games to the Twins last week and one to the Mariners because of shoddy fielding.
Aviles contributed to Sunday’s victory by hitting a two-run homer in the eighth inning after entering the game in the sixth as a pinch hitter.
RARE ACHIEVEMENT — According to Elias Sports Bureau and STATS LLC, Saturday night’s victory over the Rangers was the first in team history where the Tribe earned a 1-0 victory on a leadoff home run.
It also marked only the 23rd time in the modern era (since 1900) that any team has achieved such a win. But it has happened twice this season. (The Diamondbacks beat the Marlins May 18.)
TRIVIA PURSUIT — With the emergence of the Tribe’s rotation, leading the major leagues with 14 shutouts doesn’t seem so bizarre.
“That’s something to talk about when the season is over,’’ manager Terry Francona said. “Hopefully we’ll have 30.’’
Four of the shutouts have been by a 1-0 score, the most by a Cleveland club since 1989, when Indians pitchers recorded seven. Justin Masterson has been the winning pitcher in three 1-0 games. In two, he has gone the distance.
OTHER STUFF — The Indians have swept seven series this season. … They have a seven-game winning streak at Progressive Field. … Ubaldo Jimenez has given up two or fewer earned runs in 12 of his past 17 starts. ... Over his past 10 games, Yan Gomes is batting .368 with four RBI and five runs. ... Michael Bourn is batting .318 against left-handers and .328 with runners in scoring position.
FARM FACTS — Trevor Bauer (5-3, 3.73 ERA) gave up one earned run (three total) and six hits in five innings as Columbus lost to Durham 4-2. ... Dorssys Paulino doubled, singled and drove in two runs in Lake County’s 7-4 loss to Great Lakes.
