Vinnie Pestano won’t be the Tribe setup man for awhile.

Manager Terry Francona wants him to take a deep breath and regain his self-assurance by pitching in less stressful situations.

“I talked to Vinnie today,” the manager said. “Since he came back [from an elbow injury in mid-May], we’ve seen glimpses of the real Vinnie Pestano, but he’s been inconsistent. We’re going to put him in other spots, where he can get his confidence back, then we’ll get him back as our setup guy.”

Since being activated from the DL, Pestano has compiled a 5.66 ERA and allowed five home runs in 20⅔ innings. However, in 12 of his 21 appearances he has allowed no runs.

Joe Smith will be the Tribe’s setup man most of the time, but Cody Allen also will pitch in the eighth inning.

MEYERS TO RESUME THROWING — Brett Myers was shut down during his throwing program when his elbow began to ache, but apparently nothing is seriously wrong with him.

“I’m back to thinking that he feels good,” Francona said. “It was a musculature problem, which is good, a strained muscle. We’ll get him going pretty soon.”

ANOTHER SIGNING — The Tribe has signed its 38th-round pick in the draft, right-hander Justin Garcia, from Weatherford College.

FARM FACTS — Daisuke Matsuzaka (1-5, 5.01 ERA) gave up four runs and eight hits, striking out six in 7⅔ innings, as Columbus fell to Louisville 4-0. … Bo Greenwell homered, doubled and singled, driving in two runs, as Carolina beat Salem 7-3. Joe Wendle had three hits and one RBI, raising his average to .329. Paddy Matera homered, doubled and had two RBI. … Robbie Aviles (3-3, 4.05 ERA) gave up one earned run (two total) on six hits in five innings, as Lake County defeated West Michigan 8-4. Erik Gonzalez hit his seventh homer of the year.
