OAKLAND, CALIF: Major League Baseball is on the verge of expanding TV replay to get more plays right.
Details of what can be reviewed remain to be worked out, and the owners and players union must still vote on the proposal, but under the new plan, managers will have a certain number of challenges.
“I haven’t read it completely yet,” manager Terry Francona said. “But with technology getting so good, I like the idea of getting plays right. I hope they come up with a system that doesn’t drag games out.
“And you can bet managers will figure out ways to exploit the system, which is what they should do.”
Using a system of challenges is not ideal, according to Francona.
“I wish they would use a fifth umpire up in a [press box] booth, just like college football does,” he said. “It would take about 10 seconds.”
For NCAA football games, a replay official watches every play on a monitor. When he sees a questionable call, he signals the referee that he is reviewing it.
CITIZENSHIP NEXT? — Instead of accompanying the team from Minneapolis to the West Coast on Wednesday night, Carlos Santana returned to Cleveland for the off day to obtain permanent residency status and a green card that enables him to avoid applying for a work visa every year.
He says he probably will become an American citizen eventually.
INJURY UPDATE — Corey Kluber (sprained right middle finger) continued on his long-toss program, and Brett Myers (elbow inflammation) is almost ready to face live hitters.
“Kluber threw from 90 feet and will go to 120 tomorrow,” Francona said. “He’s flying through this pretty quickly. Myers threw his fourth bullpen and is ready to throw a simulated game at Akron.”
REVISED ROTATION — For the three games beginning Monday night in Anaheim, the Tribe’s starters will be Danny Salazar, Zach McAllister and Justin Masterson.
The Angels have not announced their rotation.
