The Indians are losing their setup man for at least 15 days, because Vinnie Pestano was placed on the disabled list late Monday afternoon with tendinitis in his right elbow.
His DL stint will be backdated to May 1, which means he will be eligible to be activated on May 16.
Pestano said his elbow began to ache after he pitched in the second game of the April 28 doubleheader against the Royals in Kansas City.
He attributed the pain to the combined effects of a long outing, pitching in cold weather and sporadic appearances.
“It’s something I’ve been battling for a couple of years,” Pestano said last week. “But I’ve always been able to maintain it in good order.”
Nick Hagadone was summoned from Columbus to take Pestano’s place in the bullpen. Hagadone, optioned to Triple-A last Friday, would be required to remain in the minors for 10 days if he weren’t replacing an injured player.
