CLEVELAND: Brett Myers (elbow inflammation) hasn’t pitched in a big-league game since April 19, which is one reason he is headed for the bullpen after he comes off the disabled list.
“Myers is going to prepare for a bullpen role,” Indians manager Terry Francona said. “With all the down time he’s had, it’s the best way for him to contribute. If he tried to ramp up to 100 pitches and had any kind of a hiccup, he might be lost for the season.”
Though he is a starter by trade, Myers has pitched in relief for the Phillies in 2007 and 2009 and for the Astros last year.
He and Blake Wood (elbow reconstruction surgery) will each throw an inning tonight at Mahoning Valley.
LEFTOVERS — Vinnie Pestano was upset about giving up two ninth-inning runs in the Tribe’s 8-7 win Saturday night.
“This season hasn’t been anything other than challenging for me,” he said. “I’ve definitely taken my lumps and bruises. But I can’t be putting my own emotions in front of the team.”
It took 34 pitches for Pestano to retire the side and earn the save. Altogether, Tribe pitchers threw 199 pitches, and the Twins used 167, issuing eight walks.
