The Indians signed veteran right-handed reliever Matt Capps to a minor-league contract with an invitation to major-league training camp for the second year in a row.

Capps, 30, spent most of 2013 on the minor-league disabled list and underwent surgery on his right shoulder in June, ending his season.

He was limited to seven appearances in spring training exhibition games and six regular-season outings at Triple-A Columbus.

In all or parts of eight big-league seasons, Capps has a 29-33 record with 138 saves and a 3.52 ERA with the Pittsburgh Pirates, Washington Nationals and Minnesota Twins.

Capps has been a closer for much of his career, succeeding in 74 percent of his save opportunities. In 2012, Capps saved 14 of his 15 chances with the Twins before being sidelined in the second half with shoulder inflammation.
