Jimenez quick to realize pleasure of no-hitter

OAKLAND, CALIF.: The vast majority of pitchers who carry a no-hitter into the sixth inning tell the media they were clueless about having held opposing batters without a hit.

Of course, that is nonsense. Ubaldo Jimenez was asked the same question about no-hitting the Athletics for 5⅔ innings Saturday and said he knew.

He also was asked if he had flashbacks of the no-hitter he threw for the Rockies in 2010.

“When I got into the fifth, I thought about those good memories,” he said.

He also was asked if he had concerns about walking five during the game.

“I worry about everything,” Jimenez said. “I worry about my velocity, my mechanics, about walks, pretty much everything.”

SIDESHOW — Fans at Saturday’s game noticed a cloud of black smoke emanating from the parking lot behind the third-base side of Oakland Coliseum and wondered what was going on.

Turns out that a tailgater stored his still-hot portable grill in the trunk of his vehicle, and it caught fire, damaging not only his car, but also others around it.

“I saw the burned-out shell sitting in the lot today,” Manager Terry Francona said.

But a careless tailgater does not explain why Michael Brantley flinched before catching a fly ball in the ninth inning. Brantley (and everyone else in the ballpark) heard what sounded like an explosion just as he positioned himself to make the catch. “It was fireworks,” Brantley said. “You just don’t expect that.”

FARM FACTS — Trevor Bauer (6-6, 4.14 ERA) gave up six runs, six hits and four walks in two innings in Columbus’ 8-1 loss to Norfolk. … Eric Haase hit his 13th home run of the season and drove in three runs, as Lake County beat Lansing 5-3. Jeremy Lucas also homered. Robbie Aviles (4-3, 3.54 ERA) gave up one earned run (three total) and three hits in five innings. … Clint Frazier doubled and singled twice, driving in one run, as the Arizona League Indians fell to the Angels 10-8.
