It was a short stay in Toronto for Russ Canzler.
The Blue Jays claimed him on waivers Dec. 21, when the Indians needed a spot on the 40-man roster for first baseman Mark Reynolds. Now, Canzler has returned to the Tribe’s 40-man roster in the same fashion.
Canzler spent most of last season in Columbus, where he batted .265 with 36 doubles, 22 home runs and 79 RBI in 130 games. He was called up from Triple-A in September and batted .269 with three homers and 11 RBI in 26 games.
To make room for Canzler, right-hander Jeanmar Gomez was designated for assignment. Last year, Gomez posted a 5-8 record and 5.96 earned-run average in 20 appearances, including 17 starts. He also compiled a 6-5 record and 4.41 ERA at Columbus.
The next question is whether Canzler will remain on the 40-man until the start of spring training. One obstacle: Recently signed outfielder Nick Swisher and starter Brett Myers need to be added to the roster when their acquisitions become official.
