The Kent State women’s basketball team earned its first Mid-American Conference win with a 60-57 victory over Ball State on Sunday afternoon.
The Flashes (4-16, 1-8) were led by Ashley Evans with a game-high 19 points and Rachel Mendelsohn with 12.
Montia Johnson added a team-high 13 rebounds. Ball State (9-11, 4-5) was led by Shelbie Justice with 16 points and Nathalie Fontaine who had 14 points and 14 rebounds.
Kent State battled the Cardinals early in the first half as neither team was able to sustain a significant advantage.
Kent State led by as many as 13, but Ball State refused to go away.
In the second half the Cardinals took the lead early, but then Kent State grabbed control of the game.
The Flashes excelled at the free-throw line and played solid defense when it mattered, as Mendelsohn came away with a steal before Ball State could get a potential game-tying shot away.
