Rachel Mendelsohn’s last-second 3-pointer in overtime gave the Golden Flashes a thrilling, 75-74 victory in their season opener against Eastern Kentucky (1-1).
The game featured five lead changes and 12 ties, most occurring in the final stages of the second half and into overtime.
Kent State took a 62-60 lead with just 16 seconds left in regulation, but Eastern Kentucky made a jumper in the final stages to send the game to overtime.
Down 74-72 and playing defense, the Flashes were rescued when Ashley Evans stole the ball, took it the length of the court and then passed it to Mendelsohn to hit the game-winner.
Mendelsohn led Kent State with 21 points and Montia Johnson recorded a double-double with 15 points and 10 rebounds.
