Kent State junior Matthias Tayala won the NCAA Division I national title in the hammer throw Thursday at the NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships at Hayward Field at the University of Oregon.
Tayala sat in third place going into his final throw and claimed the title with a toss of 241 feet, 4 inches. Tayala’s personal-best broke his own school record of 236-7.
In the women’s discus throw, Danniel Thomas of Kent State and Alexis Cooks of the University of Akron were named First Team All-America after finishing in the top four.
Thomas finished second in the nation with a throw of 187-4, and Cooks tossed 182-3 to finish fourth.
Joh’Vonnie Mosley of Kent State placed 23rd with a distance of 151-10.
In the finals of the women’s hammer throw on Wednesday, Brittany Funk of the University of Akron finished fourth and Alexis Cooks was 17th.
