Ryan Harris sits in the top 10 after the first round as the University of Akron closed the opening day of the Hootie at Bulls Bay Intercollegiate in 15th place Sunday in in Awendaw S.C.
Harris shot 2-under-par 70 in the opening round and is tied for 10th place, just 2 shots off the lead. Overall, the Zips posted a round of 15-over 303. No. 55 Missouri and No. 24 South Carolina are tied atop the leaderboard at 7-under 281.
The University of Akron women’s golf team finished the opening round in 11th place at the MSU Ocala Spring Invitational on Sunday in Ocala, Fla.
Frida Fougberg leads the way for the Zips as she sits in the top 15 at the par-72, 6,113-yard Juliette Falls Golf Resort.
Fougberg shot 3-over par to finish in a tie for 15th place. Fellow Zip Lina Bengtsson ended the day in a tie for 26th place (4-over par).
A two-out error in the bottom of the fifth inning doomed the Kent State softball team against Kentucky in a 4-2 defeat at the Kentucky Tournament Sunday.
The Flashes scored twice in the second inning to jump out to a 2-0 lead, thanks to freshman Maddy Grimm’s two-run homer. The Flashes allowed four runs in the fifth after an error.
Kent State sophomore Ian Miller upset defending NCAA champion Derek St. John of Iowa with a 14-9 win.
Miller finished in fourth place at the NCAA Championship, falling to No. 1 James Green of Nebraska in consolation finals.
