Walsh University opened Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference play Thursday with a 14-5 win over Malone at Thurman Munson Stadium in Canton.
Half of the Cavaliers’ runs were unearned, as Walsh took advantage of six errors by Malone (5-11, 0-1). Leadoff hitter Jordan Shank hit three singles and had two RBI. Drew Link and Michael Lee each drove in two runs for Walsh (9-10, 1-0), and Jake Palidar drove in three.
Kent State sophomore Ian Miller went 2-0 on the opening day of the 2014 NCAA Championships on Thursday at Chesapeake Energy Arena in Oklahoma City. Miller, the No. 4 seed, topped Edinboro’s Johnny Greisheimer 8-4 and the No. 13 seed Dylan Alton of Penn State, 4-1. Miller improved to 28-4.
KSU sophomores Michael DePalma and Mack McGuire and junior Caleb Marsh lost their first matches and moved into the consolation bracket.
