Adam Najem scored two goals and had an assist, and the University of Akron defeated Marshall 4-1 in an exhibition soccer match Tuesday at Lee R. Jackson Field.
Najem scored an unassisted goal in the 39th minute and scored off a Phil Fives assist in the 64th minute and assisted on Bryan Gallego’s first-half goal. Aodhan Quinn scored in the ninth minute for the Zips.
The Zips will travel to St. Louis on Saturday for their final exhibition match.
Track and field
The Kent State University track and field program announced Tuesday the addition of Phil Bastron as assistant coach.
Bastron, a Wisconsin native, spent the previous two seasons as an assistant coach at Division III Carthage College in Kenosha, Wis. Bastron will coach student-athletes in the vertical jump and in combined events.
Bastron was a three-time All-American and won a national title in 2009 as a part of the 1,600-meter relay at the University of St. Thomas in Minnesota. He previously was a volunteer assistant at Minnesota.
Jessica Simpson, a two-time Mid-American Conference pitcher of the year at Miami and state champion at North Canton Hoover, was hired as an assistant coach at the University of Akron.
Simpson led Miami to two MAC Championships and to the first two NCAA Tournament wins in school history. Simpson finished her collegiate career as the MAC’s all-time winningest pitcher and holds 10 school records. Simpson previously led North Canton Hoover to state championships in 2006 and 2008 and finished her high school career with a state record 69 shutouts.
