Two college football players with local ties are being mentioned with some of the game's elite as the college football season inches closer.
Northwestern senior running back Tyrell Sutton, an Archbishop Hoban graduate, and Kent State junior running back Eugene Jarvis join 73 other collegiate players on this year's preseason watch list for the 72nd Annual Maxwell Award for Collegiate Player of the Year.
Jarvis beat Kent State's single-season rushing record by more than 300 yards last year when he rushed for 1,669 yards. That ranked him fifth in the nation. He also compiled 1,975 all-purpose yards, which is second in school history, and scored 13 touchdowns. He is the nation's leading returning rusher.
Sutton is the leading active rusher in the Big Ten with 2,996 career-rushing yards. He leads all active running backs in career receiving yards per game (30.3) and career receptions per game (3.7). He joins Jarvis as a candidate for the Doak Walker Award given annually to the nation's top running back.
Candidates for the Maxwell Award are selected by the Maxwell Selection Committee and will be announced as part of the ESPN Home Depot College Football Awards Show in December.
All members of the Maxwell Football Club, NCAA Sports Information Directors, Head coaches and selected national media are eligible to vote for the awards. Florida quarterback Tim Tebow won the award last season.
