Magazu and Morgan fail to find end zone in Blue and Gold game

KENT: It is hard to say who has the lead in the Kent State quarterback derby after the Blue and Gold Spring football scrimmage Friday at Dix Stadium.
Neither fifth-year senior Anthony Magazu nor redshirt sophomore Giorgio Morgan turned the ball over. Yet, neither was able to find the end zone, either.
It was the defense making the loudest noise as the offense was forced to punt on the majority of its possessions in a 3-0 win for the Gold team.
Waiting on the majority of those punts was one of the main reasons why the offense was so stagnant. Senior running back Eugene Jarvis, who will be the main punt returner this year as well, wasn't in the backfield Friday.
Kent State coach Doug Martin held the two-time All Mid-American Conference selection out of offensive sets to prevent him from injury. Jarvis only fielded punts. He did not have any returns.
''The offensive plays were very limited tonight,'' Martin said.
Morgan and Magazu also had the built-in excuses that their defense knew exactly what was coming on every play. Unlike some other programs, Kent State makes its first-team offense play against its first-team defense. Both quarterbacks saw time with the first-string offense.
The excuses are legitimate enough, but that doesn't mean the two were willing to use them.
''We are both upset right now,'' said Magazu, who finished with 54 yards on 9-of-16 passing.
''We wanted to come out of the scrimmage with no turnovers, which we both did. But you have to put points on the board. That is disappointing.''
Morgan, who finished the game 7-for-14 for 29 yards, was especially critical afterward.
''When you come out to your spring game, you have to have some explosion. You have to have some positive,'' Morgan said. ''To put a goose egg on the board, that is just inexcusable. We have a whole lot of work to do. We have a whole lot of stuff to get corrected. You are not going to win unless you put points on the board.''
Neither of the quarterbacks made mental mistakes and played ''their best scrimmage,'' Martin said.
What was the best thing about the scrimmage for Martin?
''We are healthy,'' he said. ''We have had a really healthy spring and we have done a lot of contact.''
Edelman's future
Former Kent State quarterback Julian Edelman has found himself in the middle of a lot of NFL attention as the 2009 draft begins today.
Over the last two weeks, Edelman has visited and worked out for numerous NFL teams. Martin said eight or nine teams have seen him, including the Browns, New England Patriots, Miami Dolphins and Jacksonville Jaguars.
The amount of attention might have taken Edelman from a free-agent signing after the draft to a draft pick. Teams are realizing that they might not get him if he goes undrafted, Martin said.
The next Antonio Gates?
Edelman wasn't the only Golden Flash to work out for the New England Patriots. All-American wrestler Jermail Porter is being looked at as well.
Porter, a Firestone High School graduate, has a good chance of being on an NFL roster Monday as a non-drafted free agent. Although the 6-foot-6, 312-pounder never stepped foot on the field at Kent State or at Firestone for that matter, he is being looked at as a potential offensive lineman.
''There have been three or four teams that have been very interested in him the last couple days. A couple of them came to work him out,'' Martin said. ''I wish I would have had him.''
Spring awards
Fifth-year senior defensive lineman Sam Frist earned the Matt Ramser Award, which is given to the player who exemplifies ''courage, dedication, attitude and commitment.''
Junior safety Brian Lainhart earned the Gerald and Victoria Read Award for his ''hard work and dedication beyond the call of duty.''
Senior linebacker Anthony Mirando won the Jack Lambert Cup for being the most improved defensive player. Senior kicker Nate Reed won the Leo E. Strang Student-Athlete Award because of his 3.42 GPA in accounting. Junior tight end Jonathan Simpson won the Don Nottingham Award as most improved offensive player.
