Jason Patton, Kent State's senior first baseman/outfielder and Massillon native, was one of six baseball players recently named Louisville Slugger's National Player of the Week by Collegiate Baseball Newspaper.
In a five-game span, Patton had 10 hits in 20 at-bats with 11 runs scored, 10 RBI and four home runs. Against Youngstown State, Patton had his first career multi-home run game in a 12-0 win. At Ohio, Patton hit his first career grand slam, going 5-for-7 with six runs scored and four RBI. It was the first time a KSU player scored six times in a game since April 1992. The Golden Flashes (35-11 overall, 14-6 in the Mid-American Conference) play Tuesday against the University of Akron at 6 p.m. in the annual Diamond Classic for Kids at Canal Park.
Softball
Left-hander Markie Pozzuto recently earned Mid-American Conference East Division Pitcher of the Week honors, her first this season and second of her career.
KSU went 2-0 in her starts, as she earned a win in six innings against Toledo and in five innings against Bowling Green. Combined, Pozzuto struck out 15 batters and allowed just one walk, including striking out the side against the Falcons in both the first and fifth innings.
''I struggled early on,'' Pozzuto said of the season. ''Practice and warm-ups were going great, but something just wasn't transferring over. I've been focusing more on getting ahead in the count and using my legs more, and it's really helped out a lot.''
Kent State (24-22 overall, 15-4 in MAC) clinched its fourth consecutive Mid-American Conference East Division title Friday with a doubleheader split with Northern Illinois. The Flashes are seeded No. 2 in the upcoming MAC Tournament.
''This season has been up and down,'' coach Karen Linder said. ''We're very happy with winning the East, but we're an inexperienced team and with that you're going to have ups and downs. Earlier in the season we won a lot of close games and we know how to win close games.''
Women's golf
On the strength of recently wrapping up its 11th consecutive MAC championship, sixth-seeded Kent State will travel to its ninth consecutive NCAA Regional Tournament this weekend in Columbus.
The 54-hole event will take place at the Scarlet Golf Course at Ohio State. UCLA, Oklahoma State and Purdue headline the 21-team Central Regional field, which includes eight schools ranked in either the Golfstat or Golfweek national polls. KSU is 18th in the Golfstat rankings and is 19th in Golfweek.
The Flashes' best regional showing came when they finished second in 2003. KSU has advanced to the NCAA Championship in 2001, 2003 and 2006. After a practice round on Wednesday, the Flashes will be paired with Wake Forest and Louisville on Thursday.
Men's golf
With a 72-hole total of 1,136 (294-280-271-291), the Kent State men's golf team claimed its 17th Mid-American Conference Championship last Saturday at the Brickyard Crossing in Indianapolis.
Sophomore and Hudson-native John Hahn earned individual medalist honors for the Golden Flashes, which shot a final round 291 to win the team title by 19 strokes over Eastern Michigan.
''This week was just a culmination of a great spring for Kent State golf,'' said coach Herb Page, who claimed his 14th title in 31 years guiding the team. ''We just kept getting better each week out. ... I am so proud of the way our guys played, they worked hard all season and really dominated this week.''
Hahn won his first MAC title by shooting a 9-under 279 (71-68-66-74) after a final round 74. Two-over through 11 holes, he came roaring back with three consecutive birdies on 12, 13 and 14 before a double bogey on 18 ended the day.
Hahn is the 15th Golden Flashes golfer to win MAC medalist honors and the first since Marc Bourgeois and Tommy Wiegand shared the title in 2006, when Kent State won its last championship.
''It feels great to fulfill my goal of becoming the MAC medalist, but it is even more rewarding to win it for coach Page,'' said Hahn, who was named the MAC Golfer of the Year for a second consecutive season.
Football
Five players were recently awarded the team's traditional spring practice honors at halftime of the Blue & Gold spring scrimmage at Dix Stadium: fifth-year senior defensive lineman Sam Frist, junior safety Brian Lainhart, senior linebacker Anthony Mirando, senior kicker and Wadsworth-native Nate Reed and junior tight end Jonathan Simpson.
Frist was the recipient of the Matt Ramser Award, given to the player with the greatest improvement in spring drills. Lainhart was the recipient of the Gerald and Victoria Read Award, which goes to the player who exemplifies hard work and dedication beyond the call of duty. Mirando was presented with the Jack Lambert Cup, given annually to the most improved defensive player. Reed's 3.42 GPA in accounting earned him the Leo E. Strag Student-Athlete Award, which honors the KSU football upperclassman with the highest cumulative GPA. Simpson was awarded the Don Nottingham Cup as the most improved offensive player.
