Flashes eager to head west for tournament start

Arizona State has long history of success hosting regionals, reaching College World Series 20 times

KENT: The road to Omaha leads through Tempe, Ariz., for the Kent State baseball team.

The Flashes meet host Arizona State in their first pairing of the NCAA regional tournament Friday at Winkles Field-Packard Stadium at Brock Ballpark.

''We heard when we got here today that they were talking about warm heat, a little dry air. So we figured somewhere out west, but we didn't know if it was going to be Texas or Arizona,'' said senior first baseman Greg Rohan today at the Water Street Tavern, where the team gathered to find where they would be playing next.

''When we found out it was Arizona [State], that's a big deal man. I'm really excited,'' he said.

The Sun Devils, who grabbed the No.5 seed overall, are no stranger to College World Series success. They are 148-64 in the NCAA Tournament and have a 59-34 record in the College World Series (20 appearances). This will be the 19th time they have hosted a regional.

''We don't know really anything about their team,'' Kent State coach Scott Stricklin said. ''We know about their tradition and what they have been able to accomplish over the last 40 years of college baseball. They are a perennial College World Series team. They are always nationally ranked. Their coach is going to be a hall of fame coach and they are loaded with talent.''

Joining the No. 1 Sun Devils (44-12) and the No.4 seed Flashes in the four-team regional pairing are No.2 seed Oral Roberts and No.3 Cal Poly.

They will compete in a double elimination-style tournament for the right to advance to the field of 16 in the Super Regionals.

''I'm really excited,'' Rohan said. ''I think all the guys are real pumped up to get on that plane flight Tuesday night and get out of here and get ready to go.''

Kent State (42-15) will be without freshman reliever Andrew Chafin, the Mid-American Conference Freshman of the Year. The left-hander with 55 strikeouts in 35.2 innings tweaked his elbow at the end of the regular season.

Well, I'll help you out here. I've lived out here in Phoenix for 30 years. I'm a Zip, but maybe for just one day, I can root for ya'll. I'll be at the game, and wish you guys a lot of luck. You are definitely going to face a really good ASU squad. you'll be facing either Leake or Spence as far as pitching goes, so bring your hittin spikes! 2nd lowest era in the country. And watch the catcher Ramirez too. 18 bombs on the year and great defensively. Weather wise, you're in for a real treat. 100 degrees all weekend long and nothing but sun. Take it all in guys. You earned your way here and do us Ohio natives proud! See ya this weekend.
