Kent State baseball report

Kent State stays alive
with win over Cal Poly

Kent State 10, Cal Poly 9 —Travis Shaw hit a two-run homer and Jared Humphreys drove in three runs as Kent State held on to beat Cal Poly in an NCAA Tournament elimination game on Saturday in Tempe, Ariz.

Kent State (43-16) led 10-2 going into the ninth, but Cal Poly (37-21) scored seven runs that included Luke Yoder's two-run triple and Adam Buschini's two-run single. D.J. Gentile, who hit into an inning-ending double play with the bases loaded in the seventh, struck out looking to end the game as David Starn earned the save.

Justin Gill (4-2) got the win in relief. Cal Poly starter D.J. Mauldin (5-5) took the loss.

Late Friday

Arizona State 17, Kent State 6 — The Sun Devils scored five runs in the first inning and rolled to victory over the Golden Flashes in a first-round game Friday.

KSU fifth-year senior Greg Rohan cleared the ''batter's eye'' in center field, only the 24th player to do it in the 36-year history of Packard Stadium, but it was not nearly enough for the Golden Flashes.

Senior Jason Patton went 4-for-4 with four RBI and his 15th home run of the season, and Rohan went 3-for-5 with two runs scored and two RBI for KSU. His home run was also his 15th of the season. Junior Brad Stillings (6-4) allowed eight hits and nine earned runs in 21/3 innings.

Arizona State loaded the bases in the bottom of the first with two walks and a single. Kole Calhoun gave the Sun Devils a 2-0 lead with a two-run single. An RBI single, a sacrifice fly and an RBI groundout made it 5-0. Arizona State added two more in the second before Kent State answered with three in the top of the third.

boy, I think it's a shame that you folks choose to relegate this story to the back pages. I was at both games, and will go again today (4:00 pm your time.). This team is one you should be proud of. Forget the freaking rivalry for a week. Guys, I'm a Zip, but I'm sure doing my best to root for the Flashes in this tournament. You have no idea the quality of baseball team these guys are playing against. Nothing like it in a cold weather climate. These teams have players playing 365 days a year. Travis and Jared are as good as advertised and create problems for anybody they play. The pitching is more than I expected, and can hold its own. AZ State is just a hitting machine, so its hard to condemn pitching when they've done this sort of thing to Pac 10 opponents all year. Come on you guys, get behind this team will ya?
