Flashes need bye week to recuperate from loss to Zips

By Stephanie Storm
Beacon Journal staff writer

Kent State football coach Doug Martin is ready for a 14-day break between games.

It's time to regroup, rest and plan.

The Golden Flashes will play first-place Temple at 1 p.m. Nov. 21 at Lincoln Financial Field in Philadelphia.

''We need this week. We're a tired football team right now,'' Martin said Monday. ''We haven't had a break all year. So this break is coming at a good time for us.''

Riding back-to-back big wins over Ohio University and Western Michigan, KSU had put itself in the middle of the Mid-American Conference East Division race. But the University of Akron ended the hot streak Saturday, leaving KSU (5-5, 4-2) with two games remaining.

The 28-20 loss in front of more than 20,000 fans at InfoCision Stadium was a physical game in which UA racked up 429 yards of total offense.

It was an emotional game in which the Flashes saw two critical replays go against them.

It was a tough game in which sophomore running back Jacquise Terry, who has filled in admirably for senior tailback Eugene Jarvis, was injured in the opening quarter.

''The biggest difference in the game was our [defense's] inability to stop the run and then our inability to run the ball effectively on offense,'' Martin said. ''Really, on both sides of the line of scrimmage, we just got outplayed.''

It might take Kent State two weeks to get over the loss and focus on Temple, which boasts one of the best defenses in the Mid-American Conference.

''We're going to treat [the bye week] like a normal game week. . .although practices will be cut down quite a bit,'' Martin said. ''We need to get better this week, we need to get rested up, but at the same time, we have some things we have to get better at before we play Temple.''

As usual, Martin is not one to dwell on the past. Instead, he has already begun turning his team's attention to the next goal.

''We're a 5-5 football team with two left to play,'' Martin said. ''And around Kent State, there hasn't been a seven-win team since 1987. We have a chance to do that, so we've still got a lot to play for.''

I'll cheer on the ZIPS this week. After all, Temple needed a last second FG to beat lowly Miami.

saw a great KSU shirt at the game last Sat. The front read, "Roo Who?" and the back pictured the KSU mascot with the words, "FEAR THIS!". I have to admit, it was more witty than "KSUCKS".

You know Jason, if you read my posts last week you would have seen me write, "if" Kent wins, and I gave your soccer team props for being #1 in the country. Well you what, all I here from Crackron people is bash, bash, bash Kent State. Well......Jason........Kent State is a tier 3 school, Akron is a 4, Kent has a nicer campus, Kent State athletics has been the class of the MAC for several years, our girls are prettier than yours. Kent is designated a Research 1 University, Akron? We have 7 regional campuses, Akron? Me thinks it`s envy!

HAHA...Kent has a nicer campus than Akron? You must be hanging out with the KSU basketball team and sharing their drugs/alcohol.

Kent is nothing more than a place for left wing loons to send their kids to be indoctrinated with liberal lies.

Kent sucks and GO ZIPS.
