Fifth-year senior Dustin Kilgore won his fourth tournament of the season, going 5-0 at the Cliff Keen Las Vegas Collegiate Wrestling Invitational Friday and Saturday at the Las Vegas Convention Center.
Kent State’s 2011 NCAA champion faced his toughest competition of the season in the finals and came away with a 5-4 victory over Wyoming’s Alfonso Hernandez, improving to 15-0.
Senior 184-pounder Casey Newburg went 5-2 in a fifth-place finish. Sophomore Caleb Marsh went 3-2 on the weekend at 165, but came up short of a podium spot.
The University of Akron swimming and diving team finished in fifth place out of 10 teams as the Zips concluded the annual Zippy Invitational at Ocasek Natatorium Sunday. Toledo finished first in the women’s team standings with 1,697 points, while Akron was fifth with 999 points.
During Sunday’s finals session, senior Kelsea Cross was fourth in the 200-yard backstroke (2:02.29), and junior Catherine Carr placed fourth in the 200-yard butterfly with a time of 2:04.74.
The Zips will be back Jan. 11 for a dual meet in Oakland, Mich.
