Anderson Varejao will be a game time decision tonight, although coach Byron Scott said this morning he is leaning toward resting Varejao's bruised knee through the weekend. The Cavs host the Indiana Pacers tonight and travel to the Milwaukee Bucks on Saturday.
Tyler Zeller will again start against the Pacers if Varejao is unable to play.
Varejao injured his knee during a loss to the Toronto Raptors on Tuesday. Scott is leaning toward sitting him even if he is cleared by team doctors, which is part of the reason the team recalled Jon Leuer from Canton on Thursday.
"I'm thinking about keeping him out no matter what," Scott said at Friday morning's shootaround. "I told him, even if they clear him, it will be my decision."
Varejao has endured a rash of injuries the last few years, something Scott said will likely continue given his style of play.
"He's going to have bumps and bruises," Scott said. "You just hope he stays away from the serious injuries. He's got a pretty bruised knee right now and we want to get that thing as healthy as possible."
Zeller, originally from Indiana, struggled against the Pacers in his return game on Dec. 21. He was in foul trouble most of the night and played just 17 minutes before fouling out. Scott expects a different result tonight after he scored a career-high 20 points on Wednesday.
"I think maybe being a little too hyped up being back home might have had a lot to do with it," Scott said of Zeller's first performance against the Pacers. "It's tough for young guys to play well when they go back home. You go home the day before the game, you have so many family members who want to see you and spend time with you. I figured he'd struggle a little bit, but I think the next time around he'll be much better at it."
