Winslow has an agent known for his tactics
By Patrick McManamon
Beacon Journal sports columnist
Published on Wednesday, Oct 22, 2008
The suspension of Kellen Winslow for Sunday's game against the Jacksonville Jaguars is more than a one-game sitdown.
It's the beginning of the end of Winslow's time with the Browns.
This comes from nothing anyone said privately or publicly, but from the occurrences of the past few days and from the statement released by General Manager Phil Savage that was so cold it had icicles dripping from it.
This clearly is one angry GM.
Savage has always been restrained with announcements and news. That he was blunt and direct in the statement about Winslow speaks volumes.
Savage called Winslow's comments ''unwarranted, inappropriate, and unnecessarily disparaging to
our organization.'' He said the comments ''brought unjustified negative attention to our organization, and violated the team-first concept of our football squad.''
He also gave a scintillating defense of the team's attempts to prevent and treat staph infection.
Coach Romeo Crennel spoke on the issue on Monday — it would have been nice to hear from Savage at that point — and the coach did his best to defuse things. It did not sound like he favored a suspension.
But Winslow undercut Crennel twice — first after the game on Sunday, then Monday morning when he had more to say after meeting with Crennel on the team plane Sunday night.
Winslow cares about the team. But he also believes that he is better than most anyone and that is why he expects the ball.
This time, though, he put himself ahead of the team. After a tough loss, he made it about himself. If his coach is not on board with the suspension — and does anyone expect Crennel to say anything today except ''we've moved on''? — Winslow need only realize he is the one who put his coach in this position.
As for the staph infections, to imply that the team is not trying to prevent them is absurd.
That being said, if any player on the team is not even mildly concerned about staph he's not looking at reality. It's scary — even though it's not exclusively a Browns problem.
For that reason, Winslow had reason to be frustrated at again having staph.
But his timing on his complaints was worthy of much head-scratching.
Not to mention it's not wise to confront a GM in a hallway, clad fully in football gear except for a helmet.
The case can be made that the suspension came too late. Savage had not publicly disciplined a player even though two years ago Braylon Edwards had his hands out asking for something (remember — the helicopter to Ohio State-Michigan and falling asleep in the players' lounge?).
But in Winslow's case you have to wonder how much of what is happening is orchestrated to get Winslow out of Cleveland and into a new contract with another team.
That's what Winslow has wanted since the offseason — for his contract to be redone.
He knows that he's on borrowed time with his knee. The motorcycle accident that cost him a season also will cost him a longer career.
With a couple or a few years left, he wants to get paid — and he also knows that he's played through pain that would have sidelined most players.
The Browns were in no rush to redo the deal — and even drafted tight end Martin Rucker.
Winslow's agent is Drew Rosenhaus, who gets big deals. He's also represented players who made things extremely unpleasant with the team.
See: Terrell Owens doing situps in his driveway in Philadelphia.
See: Chad Johnson, who spent the entire offseason trying to rile his way out of Cincinnati.
See: Plaxico Burress, who got a new contract in the offseason and still was suspended for a game in New York.
See: Lito Sheppard, who made a lot of noise in the offseason in Philadelphia about wanting a new contract after he had signed a five-year, $25 million deal in 2006 (Rosenhaus said Sheppard ''outperformed'' the contract).
Players know Rosenhaus will get deals.
It's the teams that have to deal with the tactics.
Winslow will come back and be the good soldier — though that's probably not the best word to use when talking about him.
But you almost wonder if an immediate clean break might not be best for everyone.
This bridge isn't burned.
It's blown into a million little pieces.

So tell me Mr.Brainbegone,if KW would of waited 3 days to choose to go forward with his 'rights to freedom and speech' would he still have been suspended?Savage is WRONG on this one AGAIN.
Drew Rosenhaus and Winslow should have planned their strategy a little sooner, before the trading deadline had passed. Martin Rucker will far surpass everything good KW2 did with the Browns without all the BS. Don't let the door hit you Kellen.
I'll be surprised if Martin Rucker EVER has a 40 catch season.
I usually agree with Patrick, but not here. Winslow blew the whistle on the Browns. Staph is dangerous, even life threatening. Ask Doug Dieken. As I said in another thread, RAC and Savage are amateurs in a pro league. Wise up guys. Your players are your future. Treat them right or clean out your desk. Time to clean house, from the top down.
I will never understand why these athletes allow these money grubbing agents to run their lives like this .These guys always want to rework someones contract because they get paid a huge fee for doing it .Problem is , all it does is alienate the star athlete from Joe the fan.Hey Kellen ,your just a piece of meat because you let your agent treat you as such.
I'm not a big fan of complaining, overpaid pro athletes...but this is one time I have to agree with someone like Winslow. Being told to keep the condition 'hushed up' is wrong. Savage complained of it bringing negative attention to the team...did he mean moreso than the joke of a head coach, the lack of discipline, leadership or the unhappy fans (the very people that pay the bills)?? The negative attention is created from the top down Mr. Savage.
Hahahahahahahahahahahahaha!!!! I love watching this team fall apart year, after year, after year. Booo hooo dey treatin me lika a piece of meat bossa.
I'm going 50/50 on Winslow here. The "nobody sent me roses while I was in the hopital" was childish.
The other complaint is 100% legit. The Browns wanted him to keep his mouth closed because ANOTHER player got a staph infection. So, be in Winslow's shoes for a minute, and have to listen to all the rumors about his hospital stay and the Browns make it seem like HE wants his privacy just so the Browns can save face. The Browns can kiss my ace on this one. Winslow had every right to call out this bogus orginization. I'll bet he has the support of all the players on this one. Who is going to want to play here when someone gets a bloody nose and ends up a staph infection ?? How come we haven't heard a word from Randy Lerner about this staph infection mess??
I couldn't disagree with you more Pat. Winslow being suspended is an absolute joke. I've lost a lot of respect for Phil Savage. The team did not want to disclose the fact that Winslow had another staph infection so they made up the story that it was a "personal issue." So that led to all kinds of nasty rumors about STDs and him cheating on his wife. Players and the media were making fun of him. I don't blame him one bit for being upset about it. Randy Lerner needs to step in and explain this situation. What a mess!
Winslow is laying in the hospital with a SECRET desease while the press is speculating he has cheated on his wife...WHY...Because he had another Staph infection and the BROWNS didn't want the word to get out because of all the Staph infections in the past....
THAT MAKES KELLEN SELFISH?
He takes the heat because he is the only Leader on the team and he feels an obligation to protect his team mates as much as he can....
THAT MAKES KELLEN SELFISH?
When he had the guts to finally speak out about Carthon and the horrible offense and playcalling etc....and Took the heat from the PRESS who SHOULD have spoken out themselves instead of just being puppets for the Browns...
THAT MAKES HIM SELFISH...HOGWASH.
i agree with winslow on this one, the browns need to apologize for what they did to him and they need to get romeo out of town, HE IS THE ONE WHO IS A NEGATIVE IMPACT ON THE TEAM.
Mike
Amen
Don't let the door hit you on the way out!
Everybody seems to be thinking this Winslow statement is a ploy for a new contract when what he said is the truth an he is simply worried about his health an other browns players that WILL be effected in the future an all those5or 6 players that have already had their careers halted or finished.
Funny how all these problems didn't seem to exist until the SAVAGE AN CRENNEL side show circus arrived in Cleveland. It is well past ime to get ridd of the PHIL AN ROMEO COMEDY TEAM an get Professonals into these positions that know what they are doing before everyone whants out an nobody will be wanting to come in as free agent to play here!!!!!!!
I agree with Pat for once.
Some of you act like Winslow is your friend or something, defending him like this. He woulnd't give any of you the time of day, or care if your employer dropped a 16 ton weight on your heads.
He is being selfish. Whining about something right after the game. Why didn't he speak about this before? What happened in the game that caused him to complain? Because he played poorly. Out of position several times. Wanting a new contract because he knows his career was shortened by his own stupidity doing stunts on a motorcycle.
He may have been talened when he came into the league. But his physical abilities have diminished. He play with a lot of heart, but he is also a hot head on the edge of exploding.
Go ahead and cheer for him. Tell him he is right. Complain about management, because they are wrong and the worker (who makes nearly $250,000 per game) is right.
The Browns played fine without him against the Giants, Heiden looked pretty good. So if they get rid of him, who cares.
We all know that KW2 and Crennel are jerks, and should be sent packing immediately.
Savage? Not so sure, other than he should have terminated Crennel long before now.
Whether Winslow is a jerk or not he still has a right to freedom of speech. I'm glad someone finally stood up and said what they felt. Keeping everything hush-hush was wrong.
Tight ends who don't block and have three years left on their contract need to shut their mouths.
Winslow and his agent need to take a hike. If I were part of the Brown's management I wouldn't even negotiate with anyone that had Rosenhaus as their agent. These agents have ruined football. They've cost many players money and loyalty to their teams. I can't see how K2 thinks he's better than anyone especially Steve Heiden.Heiden can block and catch the ball as well as any tight end I've ever seen. I would even bet that he keeps his mouth shut in the huddle. All Winslow has done since he's been here is get injured being stupid and running his mouth. Ozzie Newsome and Winslow's father with the two best tight ends I've ever seen and his boy doesn't compare. Look how the Browns played without Winslow against New York. Great! They didn't even need any soldiers to protect them. Go Browns!
Please Winslow, leave. Go be a soooollldddjjaaa somewhere else, and take your knee operations with you.
Steve,
I agree with you 100%. Sorry that you got staph, something definitely needs to be done about that. But it is his own fault that he isn't getting the contract that he wants. He is a 27yr old with the knees of a 36-yr old player.
Football is a business. The Browns will find a new employee.
Freedom of speech does NOT apply within the workplace. Management does indeed have the ability to censor any speech deemed inflammatory.
There is no such thing as free speech in the workplace. Any company will censor any speech deemed inflammatory toward the well-being of the company. If a comment is made and penalties are passed down after the fact, you can be darn sure that the company will act severely. He is lucky he is a pro athlete; in the real world, he would have been fired.
AM I MISSING SOMETHING?
Did Winslow even utter the word Contract when discussing this Steph thing?
I'm about 50/50 on this one too. The Brown's have been good to KW, paid him when he crashed his bike and was out for the season. Yes he's a hot head, was in college too, just his nature. Do they need him to win, NO! Heiden is very capable. I agree with him speaking out about the staph.
The Browns are finished. Trade K2 for a 6th round pick. Trade DA for a 6th round pick. Fire Romeo. BQ will be a bust. Starting over again. I love it. GO STEELERS !!!
Till CRENNEL is gone the Browns are going to be nothing. As A browns fan since 1987 I have never been so turned off from watching the Browns as I am now. Since I live in Tenn. I will beable to cancel my sunday ticket and watch a real team Go Titains!!!!!
I can't understand how in a town of hard workers, so many are taking management's side. They let the rumors fly; they didn't even bother calling and wishing him well; they've barely acknowledged that he had an all pro year, played w/pain, works out religiously and is a great athlete. Is he a loudmouth? yes. Is he a typically hyperactive overconfident receiver? yes. So what? He delivers. Anyone who knows about staph infections knows that the management should have informed the team about Winslow's condition. Anyone who knows anything about football can't possibly think that Heiden (also suffering physical problems) or any unproven rookie will be as good as Winslow.
Can we just get rid of Savage? He's nothing more than a glorified scout. And Crennelephant isn't much better. Sorry.
K2, yes he ran his mouth. But it's a staph infection that is likely going to end Joe Jurevicius' career.
K2 will be better off in another uniform, this team is nearly the joke the Oakland Raiders are.
Pathetic, just pathetic.
Thanks, Roy. You hit it right on the head. No time did K2 say anything about a contract during this staph thing. Staph can kill. If he says he wants a trade, maybe because he wants to live to play another day without the threat of staph. Seven cases with the Browns is seven too many. K2 was a punk when he first came to the Browns, but he grew up. Maybe BE needs to, also. Savage and RAC are wrong here. I hope K2 wins his appeal. He deserves it.
Hey Savage, Romeo and the Top Men at the Browns....
YOU ARE ALL IDIOTS and obviously enjoy being the laughing stock of the NFL.
Even the St. Louis Rams look better than you this year.
I always hope the best for the Browns, but really, the Buckeyes are more of a PRO Team than the Browns are.
Buckeyes vs Browns = 56 - 3 (romeo kicks a field goal with 14 seconds left in the game)
OldManGrump
For the last time, STFU. Take your Steelers BS somewhere else. We're talking about the Browns here.
Hilel
A town of hard workers, what does that have to do with anything. How do hard workers associate with a loud mouth idiot like Winslow, who makes nearly $250,000 a game? Some people have brains, and can see that the guy is a fool. He has made mistakes (the MC crash) and wants more than he deserves (asking for a new contract after one decent season).
Wake up, take off your Brown glasses and realize this player is only out for himself. He is not a team player. He says that management didn't want to disclose the illness and he agreed. Then he decided to break the silence, when he was upset with the Browns loss (or his poor effort).
Winslow's appeal is all about the money and his ego. They cannot force the Browns to play him. And since he hasn't practiced all week if they did play him he'd look as out of place as he did last week.
Hilel,
Here is why these hard workers are taking management's side:
"SHUT YOUR EFFING MOUTH AND PLAY FOOTBALL!" Talk to Romeo, Savage, and Lerner, but talking to the media is self-serving, and let's your team down.
Winslow is the 6th Browns player in 4 years to get a staph infection. he deserves the right to speak up in fear for his health. The browns and some people on here are just plain stupid. Winslow is a work horse and plays hard every week. and is one of our best players. And now some people want him gone? This is exactly why the Browns will never be a winning organization.
Hey K2, if you can read, and after graduating? from Miami, go away. you are a jerk, an overrated prima dona that has a narcistic belief about yourself. send me your address and I will get you a copy of the BCS game with Ohio State. You are as much a "soldier" as an armadillo. go go go away away away
Oh yeah, maybe K2 got his staph from cleaning one of his motorcycles, the one with a governor and training wheels? staph is everywhere so don't blame the Browns, maybe his house needs cleaned?
Say goodbye to Winslow---Hell, we played better without him against New York. He doesn't block! Because of his Butch Davis' stupidity he got hurt on an onside kick attempt when the team had no chance of winning the game, then, he crashes his motorcycle trying to be Evil Knievil. He COULD be a great player, but I don't think it will happen in Cleveland. He's a competitor that reacts and talks first! I think he wants to win! Something that has NOT been in Cleveland for a long time. The trouble is we have our key position being played by the wrong person!
Winslow didn't complain about his contract when the Browns paid him while he was out for 2 years because of his contract-nullifying accident on a motorcycle. They never asked for their bonus money back, either. The Browns have sttod by Winslow when they needn't have done so. His response? A total lack of the sort of loyalty the team showed him.
Does anyone remember Art? More so JUMP ART JUMP?
It is High time Romeo Jump should be on the chants as well as Savage Jump. I can care less that Kellen tore his knee up, as much as I can care less that any of you got drunk, hit your wife or got stealing..
It is ashamed that Savage and Crennel would hide a Staph infection in their own interests, its bad business when they do, period! Good luck to K2 in his new team next year, I will miss seeing him pick defenses apart.
Romeo, Savage.....JUMP!
Pat your a STEELERS FANATIC, I understand now. WOW
Federal privacy laws (HIPPA) prevent business from commenting on ANY type of illness or injury of an employee. If winslow wanted to comment about the nature of his illness he could of. But whining about it after a poor game and blaming others is just reflective of him and his desire to obtain a new contract.
Browns - trade him away for the good of the team and give him a new 200 horsepower motorcycle as a going away gift.
