Might not be fair, but Mangini's time is up
By Patrick McManamon

CLEVELAND: The Browns have reached the time for a difficult decision regarding the future of Eric Mangini: There shouldn't be one.
Sunday was another humiliating loss, this one to the Green Bay Packers, at home. The 31-3 final does not do it justice.
The Browns were abysmal.
Yes, a bunch of guys had the flu during the week, and the flu stinks.
But so do the Browns — now 1-6 and playing worse.
The Packers were playing without two starters on the offensive line. They found a way to play well, to compete, to win.
Which is what mentally tough teams do.
The Browns find ways to lose, to botch games, to turn a loyal-to-a-fault fan following dispassionate and blase.
Coach Eric Mangini did not deserve the personal shots taken at him in Rolling Stone last week, but professionally, he has done nothing with this team except make it worse.
The Browns ended last season
playing their third- and fourth-string quarterbacks. This season's team has its roster, minus the normal number of injuries. It's not overly beaten up, and it's not an expansion team.
Yet it's the worst Browns team since the jubilant return in 1999.
This is Mangini's team. It's his approach, coaching staff and roster — with 23 new players on opening day (and 10 former New York Jets now on the team).
The Browns have been humiliated on the road in Baltimore and Denver, embarrassed at home by the Minnesota Vikings and the Packers. They lost by three to the Cincinnati Bengals then won by three in Buffalo.
Imagine — the highlight of the season is a three-point win over the Bills, when the starting quarterback completed two passes.
The two quarterbacks have regressed to the point that they don't resemble the guys who played the previous two seasons. All the Browns have done with Derek Anderson and Brady Quinn is destroy their trade value.
Quinn was yanked after 10 quarters. The past 12 quarters, Anderson has gone 23-for-70, yet during a blowout loss Sunday, Quinn never looked for his helmet.
Is there any clearer indication that he has absolutely no future with the Browns?
Go down the roster, especially to the places Mangini made changes. The right side of the line? No better. Neither are the other spots where Mangini brought in ''his'' guys — at receiver, tight end, safety, inside linebacker or defensive end. Not to mention offensive coordinator.
Too, consider the teams that former coaches Butch Davis and Romeo Crennel took over. None had a Shaun Rogers at nose tackle, a Josh Cribbs, a Joe Thomas, an Eric Steinbach.
Mangini did not take over a 12-win team, but he also did not take over one that should lose by 28 at home.
After the loss to the Pittsburgh Steelers eight days ago, their offensive coordinator, Bruce Arians, said the Steelers noticed the Browns like to blitz the safeties on first and second down. If you protect, Arians said, you can make big plays by running guys through the vacated area.
Guess what the Packers did in the first quarter? It saw safety Abram Elam blitz, then sent Donald Driver to Elam's area for a 71-yard touchdown that featured yet more missed tackles.
The players can say they're playing hard for their coach.
The evidence isn't there.
The Browns can keep hoping that things will get better and the ''foundation'' is being built.
If they do, they're fooling themselves.
It's difficult and painful to admit a mistake, but coaches have been replaced sooner.
The Browns and owner Randy Lerner need to start considering this possibility. Seriously.
Is it fair to Mangini? Probably not. He's trying, he's working. He doesn't want to lose. But it's not working. The Browns could win next Sunday, yes, but what does that make them? Two-and-six.
And is it any less fair than it was to Quinn to have 10 quarters to prove himself? Mangini wanted this system where he decides personnel. It's his show, and his record.
Most important, though, is perpetuating this situation fair to the fans who have to watch this nonsense week after week after week? To give them this kind of effort and play after they've spent so much of their hard-earned money?
If the Browns think they have problems now, wait until December, when it's cold, and 25,000 are in the stands and games are blacked out locally. And wait until they start selling tickets for 2010.
The only thing worse than making a mistake is not admitting it.
Continuing a mistake ''just because'' only compounds the mistake.
The Browns' defense has been terrible all season, but coordinator Rob Ryan might be able to reach the players in a way Mangini hasn't. He's done nothing to earn the job, except be the best option on the staff to be an interim.
Heck, it can't be worse.
It's a tough decision for Lerner, because he personally hired Mangini. But this team has gotten worse — in every way — and there's no evidence short of a 6-3 win in Buffalo that the team believes in what it's being told.
Nor is there a shred of evidence that it will get better.
The time has come to recognize a mistake, make a tough decision and start over again next season. It's another restart and that's one more too many, but maybe it will produce better results and some long-lost continuity.
What's taking place is simply not working.

I'm not a Mangini fan. I am a Browns fan and the revolving door has to stop. Give Mangini the length of his contract to get to the playoffs;if that doesn't happen, then show him the door. Remember Patrick,Lerner will pick Mangini's replacement;we shouldn't be in any hurry for another major decision from him.
How does Lerner not lose all of the family fortune?
I think the Journal needs to admit a mistake with you. My cousin Eric will do fine!
Nicely stated, Pat.
I expected a rough start. But I expected to see signs that this team was turning around.
I expected the Browns to lose their share, but I thought they'd be hard-fought games that were competitive, rather than losses where the other team is saying that their own practice squad players run our defense better than we do.
Lerner was seeking a lot of change with this hire, he must have been willing to accept some early rough patches in Mangini's tenure to get those changes implemented.
Even so, this has to be Lerner's nightmare scenario right now. We all know the talent on this team leaves much to be desired. But the talent isn't THAT bad.
No good can come from firing Mangini mid-season. Who would you hire? The assistants? Are you kidding? No way insert-big-name-here is going to touch this team until the end of the season.
As a fan, I am looking to see if the team turns around in the second half of the season. Any win is impossible to expect right now, but this team's roster is good enough to win at least as many games as they won last year. If they continue to get rolled week-in-week-out then by all means, the Browns should cut their losses and try again with new leadership.
I was thinking about the QB situation this weekend. Quinn completed a decent % of his passes, but he almost never thru deep. Lots of short passes when he was starting. Anderson, who has no touch, has thrown short, medium and long, all equally bad. And then it hit me. Quinn throwing nothing but short passes shows how litle confidence the coaches have in him. So, now the team is stuck with the lowest rated QB in the league and a really early pick in the draft, that they will probably trade.
The Browns need to go away.
The Cleveland Browns organization: Laughing stock of the NFL.
Oh here we go agian. Blame the Quarterbacks then blame the couches. It is the same thing over and over agian. When are Brownie fans going to realize. The Owners Don't want a winning team. There is big money in losing. You really think they didn't pay Anderson to drop that ball when it was handed off to him. What Quarterback would do that then look around like "Where did the ball go". That was a set up. Go Steelers
Poster - Lerner is still making money because the browns' fans are still stupidly buying tickets and merchandise. Lerner is not a football person, doesn't care about the wins, just about making money.
Brady Quinn was drafted because he is a homer, not for his skills (he has none).
Mangini's "system" will take alot of time to work. The biggest problem is the two "leaders" of our "alleged" football team does NOT know how to draft talented football players! We draft Alex Mack and Terry Robiskie with our first two picks and could have had Clay Mathews and Ray Maleluga. Mangini needs to figure out that "you win with defense!" Evidently, his days as a ball boy and time with Belichick he wasn't watching that!
The nice thing is, just like the Indians, I played golf and did some yard work during that beautiful day and didn't subject myself to watching this pitiful team and organization. It will happen the rest of the season as well. I can't imagine what the season ticket holders are thinking. If this doesn't get any better soon, the Cavs will be putting a big streak of consecutive sellouts because they have an owner that WILL get great talent and do anything it takes to win. Our "alleged" pro football and baseball teams surely wont!
More and more I see Lerner making business decisions rather than sports decisions. Keeping BQ benched so as not to pay him a big bonus is an example. Promising Cribbs a boost in pay then reneging is another. It's time for Lerner to acknowledge that it's the fans who pay the freight by buying the Browns in many ways. Hey, Mr. Lerner, if you are not going to be serious about giving the fans a competitive team, sell the Browns and end this prolonged farce.
For all you D.A. admirers, I hope you are happy. I have NEVER seen such an inept "athlete" before in my life! He is constantly throwing into double and even triple coverage. He has problems taking a snap. Hell, even Bernie had more moves than this tool! Was anyone paying attention to him after his interception? He STOOD there watching like he couldn't believe it! A disciplined QB would have instantly went into defensive mode and ran after the ball. You can bet someone like Favre, Big Ben or even Testaverde god forbid would have tried to make a play! I too believe that we need to let a coach get his system in place and let it go for a couple years but these girls play with ZERO passion. Why is it they make zero adjustments after the half? I think Pat is right, time to cut our losses. We need a new coach, GM AND a new owner! McDaniels ie looking pretty good right now.
And the Indians are what? The laughing stock of Baseball my friend.
Mr. Lerner,
Please Please Please sell this team. sell the team to someone who "gets it', someone who cares about Browns Football, or at least NFL Football (not English Premier League soccer ). I beg you as a life long Cleveland Browns fan, please turn this team over to an owner who WANTS to win football games, who WANTS a Lombardi Trophy, who WANTS playoff games, just as much the many Cleveland Browns fans WANT it. Sell the team to the City of Cleveland, let fans buy stock in the team with PSL and Season Ticket money. Just do something to get yourself away fromt his team and give it to someone who cares. Please consider this idea Mr. Lerner.
I, often, don't agree with Pat. This is a case of that. The revolving door must end. If Mangini is fired, next season will be worse.
Lerner fumbled when he did not hire the Local kid Josh McDaniels.....Eric Mangini has chased2 1st round picks away and could not find a qb till 3 days before the first game........He needs chased....This team is one of the worse ever
Pat, as usual, your stupid comments are, well, stupid as usual.
Browns and Cleveland sports in general, continue to lose no matter who is on the team, be it coaches, or players. Then those players and coaches go somewhere else and do good. Hhhmmm, does that tell us all something.
I'm going to say it again. I'm tired of the Browns making Cleveland the laughing stock of the NFL. I say this: don't watch them on TV and don't go to the games. Period. Maybe then they'll finally LEAVE CLEVELAND FOR GOOD! GET OUT BROWNS, WE"RE SICK OF YOU EMBARRASSING OUR TOWN. GET OUT, AND THIS TIME STAY OUT!!!
Hey Patrick .......
LET'S COMPARE YOU AND TERRY PLUTO....AND SEE HOW LONG THE ABJ SHOULD GIVE YOU??????
How long should the Beacon Journal give you before admitting their mistake ?????
You never gave Eric Mangini 1 game much less 10 quarters........
I blame the owner of the Browns for hiring Mangini in the first place. Mangini had a poor track record, and lacks experience. Well, the owner got what he paid for!!!
Maybe it is time for Mangini to scrap with LeBron's friends?
How could it get worse next year. This team has been embarrassed in five of its losses. The team was not even close to playing good football in the game that it won in Buffalo. The only time this team has looked decent was against Cincy. The author of this article is correct; Mangini has since his arrival contstantly made decisions which have made this team worse. The players he has brought in from the Jets have been exploited worse than the holdovers. I mean come on now how many time has Abe Elam gotten himself in a terrible spot and cost this team a touchdown. It happened at least once yesterday when he attempted a late blitz and Rodgers lobbed a short throw over his head to a WR who scored an easy 71 TD. This team is playing the worst fooball since it has come back. Lerner needs to sell the team, to someone with enough Football Savvy to hire a decent GM/Head Coach.
I'm just SHOCKED at the comments of Mangini support, however begrudging they may be. You all seem to think that "just giving it time" will fix things. Didn't you read the article? Don't you "get" the facts? Mangini has already turned over 40% of the roster with HIS HANDPICKED GUYS, and this is the debacle we get. We SAW the draft day debacle, as well. And now, you're willing to give this clown ANOTHER draft day to waste??
Frankly, it's time the LEAGUE stepped in, like the NBA did with Stepien, and take control. Lerner and Mangini are running this franchise right into the ground and devaluing the NFL as a whole. Cleveland is a national laughingstock, and Lerner doesn't seem to care one iota.
ADMIT THE FRIGGIN MISTAKE, LERNER. GET RID OF THE WATERBOY. I'm certain Marty would step in immediately. At least he's a professional.
You cant get rid of Mangini yet
Coors beer doesn't have his commercial done yet
For the first time this year, I sat and watched a big part of a Browns' game. The first impression I got was that Jamal Lewis is incredibly slow and hesitant. Then, that the defense appears lost - Driver's easy TD.
And, how does Belichick take Julian Edelman, a QB from a weak MAC program, throw him in as a 3rd WR - and suddenly the guy can catch balls at the NFL level while our 2nd round draft picks can't catch the flu?
Finally, it's so easy to just sit there and watch the game crumble before your eyes. After the Packers' 2nd TD, you know the game is over. And the players do, too.
Like many others, I got a bunch of work done around the house yesterday between 1:00 and 4:00. It's sad how it has developed over the years, but NFL football doesn't even hit my radar screen any more, except for my weekly fantasy football match-up.
DS - funny!!!!
The photos look like a Green Bay showcase! Fire Mangini! Move the Browns to the UFL!
Anytime I come home to Akron, I wonder why I see so much Steeler gear around. Do you realize that the Browns haven't been a consistent contender for over 20 years? I'm talking about the Cardiac Kids era. Even the years the the team has made the playoffs since returning, it was more because other teams made errors than the Browns actually winning their way in. If you are a NE Ohioan under 25, you don't remember that this team actually could win football games. How sad is that? Even if the team turns around and becomes the next NE Pats under Mangini, there is a whole generation of fans that are gone. Maybe this team does need to go. Another 20 years, and they won't be missed at all.....

Coors beer doesn't have his commercial done yet
Yes. The Coors commercial will be the kiss of death. Stay tuned.
IJUST DON'T CARE ANYMORE!!!!!
This team is worse than the expansion years. Mangini is in a fantasy world. He is trying to play with a bunch of special team players(except maybe Joe Thomas). We are several long years from ever being competitive. NEW COACH? NEW PLAYERS? NEW OWNER,What a mess!!!! It is so hard to say this because of the years spent being loyal to the Browns. I JUST DON'T CARE ANYMORE!!!!!
The Browns are not relevant any more and neither is Mangini.
Maybe the fan base need to inundate the Nfl Offices like they did in 1995 to force them to get rid of the Lerner family as owners, they sold them the team now get it back!
Pat wrote: "Most important, though, is perpetuating this situation fair to the fans who have to watch this nonsense week after week after week? "
No, we don't. I collected my leaves off the lawn during that "game". Brown and orange gear is forbidden as gifts in my house. I won't follow another team, so I just don't pay attention so much. It's as if the Browns are gone again, and the NFL is something that happens elsewhere.
Randy Lerner has a soccer team, Ashton Villa, that he turned from a perpetual loser into a winning team. It's where Mr. Lerner's passion is. The Browns are simply a cash cow. All decisions regarding the Browns appear to be done with haste so as to dispatch dealing with an unpleasant task.
The Browns will not win as long as Randy Lerner owns the team. Fire Mangini, don't fire him, doesn't matter.
Hey Dudes! Wake up and smell the $dollar$. No fans, no income, nowhere to run. Start your complaining with the owner, and forget the coach and players. You demand value for your ticket purchase. So stop buying them until that value is visible. We are "capitalists", so act like one and stop whinninng. It all starts or stops with buying that ticket. So maybe the root of the problem is YOU.
Isn't Romeo still under contract?
Patrick's assessment seems to be right on the mark. The clowns have regressed under mangini. What a mess!! Normally, stability and continuity are the words of the day; but this guy is running things into the ground rather quickly. It's dire straits for browns fans. It seems like the clowns ownership wants this team to fail.
The Browns suck. But remember you stupid pittsburgh fans, you bought tickets for 50 years of losing too. HA HA !!! Go Brownies!!
Six Rings, nuff said
It's time for the NFL to admit they made a mistake letting Cleveland have a team after the Brown's went to Baltimore.
Cak2tol if you're going to talk about the Cardic Kids make sure you spell it right - Kardic Kids - secondly for those you who want the Browns to go and not come back are IDOTS. Do you know many states/cities would love to have football, baseball and baketball teams and Cleveland has them all. Okey so the Browns stink have since they came back - I agree the Randy Lerner should sell this team to someone who cares about football and the history of football. All the records this franchise has is being laughed at now because of the team we have. Then they are thinking about trading Josh Cribbs are they nuts!
Anyways - and to you Steeler fans - most of you are fans only because they're wining - and those are not real true fans.
With that said - I'll always be a Browns fan no matter what - hopefully someday we'll get an owner care about football and Cleveland.
I'm a firm believer in giving a coach two seasons before judging what they're doing. With the exception of Buffalo, the Browns have played very good opponents up to this point. They currently have 11 picks in next year's draft. I'm willing to give the guy a shot to make some progress this coming off season before I start calling for his head.
and this is a surprise!!! the browns are a disgrace to cleveland... cleveland fans find another team to support, the browns are a lost cause..
Those of you who think we should hang onto Mangini answer me this:
What good has Mangini done for this teasm?
Isn't it interesting that the Brown's are having one of, if not one of the worst seasons in how many years??
Randy Lerner listens to the NFL and hires Mangini after threes days?
Fan's attitudes are probably at a all time low.
Los Angeles,California is building a new stadium for a team they do not have???
Are Cleveland Browns fans getting screwed by the NFL again?
Are major corporate sponsors(PNC, Giant Eagle) are out of Pittsburgh?
We better watch out, we could be losing our favorite franchis again.
The Fans should petition the NFL to change the rule about ownership and allow fans(like in Green Bay)to buy the team!!
When you look at the BIG picture it sure sounds interesting doesn't it????
Cak2tol...soo much pittsburgh gear due to front running squealer fans breeding more front running squealer fans. Don't blame them though, what do Browns fans have to cheer about?? But all these front runners will be born again Browns fans as soon as we get a team. It took the squealers 45 years to win so it might be a while.
Fastone...couldn't have said it better myself. Yep, at least many chores get done around the house.
I listen to the NFL channel on Sirius they are former players and people who make it their JOB to know the ins and outs of the NFL,they were appalled when Missgenie was hired he made the same mistakes romeo did with clock mngnt 1/2 time adjustments etc etc..he was run out of NY with the same problems we have now his honeymoon was over quick, bringing in #4 was the GM s move look how good the coach was when the 4 got hurt again the people who make it their job to know cant figure the logic!! Again i saw a confident kid play QB against Denver last year how did he get SO BAD SO QUICK maybe just maybe its the coach>>Pat you are pushing the right buttons this is a hot topic folks do a lil research on what they thought of Missgenie in NY maybe then youll stop drinking the KoolAid and wish for something to change we HAVE lost our patience ( see NY,Denver,Miami) why cant that be us! HEY HO MISSGENIE GOTTA GO!!!!!
This article is a joke!!!!!! I like you Pat but I dont know what you are thinking. We have problems... yes. But one of the problems is getting a new coach every other year. We do not have the level of guys right now but we will. If we go off cutting Mangini right now, then this time next year we will be at the same spot with a diffrent coach. He has been doing it his way to get what he feels he needs to win. Part of the reason we are not good is because he has cut are play makers. but those play makers were all about them and not the team. Edwards was gone after this year anyways. He was not going to re-sign with the browns. at least we got two picks (possibly a second rounder) and two guys for him, instead of nothing at the end of the year. I liked winslows heart but i'm not so sure he would have re-signed with us either when his contract was up. after cutting those guys it was clear that he is making strides for the future!!!!!! we will be in a hole for this year but we can bring some more of the parts during the off season and build this thing right. Pat this article should have never been wrote. now you are whipping up others over what you (wrongly) think. what i see of mangini is, if you are going to do it, do it all the way and right.
Honda...squealer fans also bought tix and merch for 45 years of losing football. They were pretty stupid too. And if the Brownies ever begin winning again(and it will happen), most of the front running squealer fans will jump back on the Browns bandwagon. Just watch.
OH YEAH!! GO CAVS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! GO STEELERS !!Fire the coach lil clownies..give me a reason to come back
Ragarding those of you who think we should give Mangini a "chance". Consider how much of a chance he gave Brady Quinn. Yes, this is a business. But a double-standard never works anywhere in our society.
Let's try to keep our heads on, people. Yes, this year is awful. But there is the dawn of a new day on the horizon, and it has nothing to do with a "maybe next year" attitude.
The Browns have eleven draft picks next year, and it will be the biggest ever. Why? As an uncapped year at the end of the collective bargaining agreement, even NCAA juniors will be trying to go pro... giving the Browns the pick of the litter in the biggest draft of our lives.
Crime of the Century -
We could have 100 draft picks, it does not matter. There draft picks are getting us no where!
This team needs what San Fran just got with Mike Singletary. A former player who gave it his all on the field. Now a respected coach with high demands of his players. This team seems to have no unity on or off the field. That falls on the coach and his staff and ownership who hired him. Look at previous winning teams. All had great respected coaches. Meaning nothing bad but they need to find a Marty,(again) Dungy, Cowher, even A Ditka or Parcell type to clean house. This team is not competive really don't see Mangini being the answer. It all starts from ownwership down. So start with firing Warfield and his scouting staff. Then throw a offer to Cowher that would make him a idot not to accept. Only way your going to get him.
Another abysmal performance by a washed up joke that should have never been hired and should be fired immediately. I'm not talking about Mangini, I'm talking about you Pat. You are a turd of a journalist in a town full of turd journalists. You've had a hard-on for the Browns since they showed you the door, and you've clearly lost your ability to write objectively about the team as a result.
Furthermore, you and all of your fellow "D-list" colleagues in our local media need to stop calling for Mangini's head without having a plan for what the team could do to replace him. Who would you bring in to coach here? Would they even be interested in coming? It's really easy to come up with knee-jerk reactions to adversity, it's a lot harder to come up with solid solutions.
To place the blame on Eric Mangini or the wrong chose of quarterback is wrong. Look at the past history of the Brown going back to the 70's. It started with Modell, who the majority of NE Ohio fans disliked, rightfully so. How many coaches have come and gone since that time, don't have enough space alloted to include there names. The question about our current owner is he an owner or a Football owner. The answer is obvious. The Steeler kick our buts regularly, why because there way of building good teams are opposite of ours. We need a "football" owner, one who is visible and involved with events in N E Ohio, similar to the Steelers owner. Build the team by the draft, thats right I said DRAFT. Completely change our approach to the draft process. Stick with one coach during that time and see what happens. Quit the revolving door philosophy we have now, how many coaches have the Steelers had the since the 70's. Thats why the Steelers have won 6 Super Bowls, compared to our 1964 NFL championship. The 64 game was not televised, however it was on TV in black and white the next day. Gary Collins, 1st round draft choice out of U of Maryland, caught 3 touchdown passes that day. Millions of us are still waiting for the Browns to be Super Bowl. They say patience is a virture, but 45 years is to long to wait.
Crime of the Century
You sound like someone who runs the Indians organization. Bottom line: If Mangini can't show substantial progress with the team, by year-end, he should go. We don't need a rookie coach, any more than we need an uncaring owner. We need a (proven)coach who can handle the situation, and an owner who knows where his stadium is.
Another week goes by and Pat re-writes the same exact column again.
Pat, try analyzing the game and giving your opinion on how things whould be different rather than just stating the obvious... They're a bad team right now.
You're the pure definition of a Monday Morning Quaterback, but you only use the final score to bring forth your opinion.
They're not playing well. So what should they do to improve? How will turn things around? You don't have a clue because you know very little about football. A good sports writer would dissect the game and have opinions on what happened.
Do us a favor... read a few Terry Pluto articles and maybe you'll have an idea of how to write an article after watching a football game.
If the ABJ needs a Browns beat writer that can actually form an opinion about the ins and outs of an NFL game.... i'll do it for free.
This past summer, when Coach Mangini was having players run laps for making mistakes, it occurred to me that he was the wrong person for the job. He was not treating his players like adults. His own record was not flawless. It is one thing to have Vince Lombardi, Tom Landry, or Don Shula make a person run a lap - because of their accomplishment, these men have the moral authority to do so. It is another to have Eric Mangini, a person with position but who has not yet earned respect, to order punishment. Coach Mangini planted the seeds for an unhealthy atmosphere from the start. His first mistake was thinkng that discipline and punishement are the same thing. His second was assuming that just because he was named coach meant that he had immediate unconditional respect. If Tony Dungy or Bill Cowher is named a coach, they have instant unconditional respect and have the records to show why.
I agree with the first commenter that the Browns can't just continue to shuffle the coaching deck and magically get positive results. Every time a team does a wholesale shakeup like that, it's basically starting from scratch again. Then again, this team really has nothing to lose, I suppose. The fundamental problem here is the lack of any semblance of a passing game. I heard all of the media talking heads yesterday lamenting the Browns lame efforts running the ball. I kept hearing "gotta establish the run to open up the pass". Hey, that may have been standard fare in the NFL 10 years ago, but not anymore. Take a look at the stats for yesterday's games. Only 3 of yesterday's winning teams had an individual rusher surpass 100 yards. Most of the featured backs were in the 60-70 yard range. It's been like that every week. The NFL is devolving into a hybrid of arena football. Fling the pigskin 40-50 times down field and hope for the best. The Browns have obviously NOT found their answer at QB. Let's not even discuss the WR situation. I say let the current regime clean house at the offensive skill positions (where necessary) and install a respectable passing attack, through our many draft picks next year and through off-season wheeling an dealing. The team should be able to strengthen the D in the same manner. Just my 2.
The Fat Lady done sang on the Browns a long time ago
I wonder...if the owners had to give the fans a money back guarantee if that would put a fire under someone's back side and get a team together that could bring it home at least once in our life time
First off, who would be the best replacement? How about Mike Shanahan? Give him total control, contracts, drafting, coaching. Keep BQ, and our O -line, & D-line. Use the uncapped draft picks for LB, DB, CB, RB, O-RG, O-RT, TE. If the chance to get Graham Harrel as a back up, what a deal on the cheap (Lerner likes cheap). Charley Casserley, or Jimmy Johnson to be hired consultants for Draft, and O-coach play creation. Bring in true professionals to run the organization. Don't let Ohio talent leave the state - Bring in Texas talent, there's lots there too.
BTW, welcome home Bernie! Send me a new jersey, my old #19 is really worn out.
Timbo, as I stated B4, Graham Harrel is the kind of QB that can & does fling that pigskin around. He is playing in the CFL right now, so you know he's throwing almost every play. Think his arm isn't strong? Bet it's stronger & more accurate than any current Browns QB. Mangenious screwed up, when he had the chance the first time. Time for a pass happy offense, works for the Cardinals...
I don't understand why most of you out there blame the coach and the QB, when it is the whole team to blame for playing like a scout team. I don't have the answers to the problems facing the Browns, but for one I don't think that firing Mangini is the answer. For one thing this team needs is consistency at the head coach position. Another thing is that it is doubtful the team will find a decent replacement as most head coaches that become available were fired by another team just like Mangini last year. A coordinator is not the answer either, remember Romeo.
The best thing Lerner can do is hire a crack team of talent evaluaters to evaluate the players and prospective draft picks to select the best players for the team. Mangini will not like this so Lerner will have to man up and tell Mangini that this is the way to go. Mangini is not at the stage in his career that he deserves to have Belichick/Parcells control over the team.
Who really thought that the Browns had a snow ball chance yesterday? Please, anyone who follows the GAME and is more than a blind, love them forever type knew the outcome before the coin flip.
Cleveland fans should not be crying about the team to loud because they (us) will be crying louder if they (we) loose this team again.
Think of this. How many sports entertainment dollars are in the greater Cleveland area? Who gets these dollars? Indians, Browns, Cav's, right. Now think about a big new casino right downtown, in the area of Gund arena. How many of these sports entertainment dollars are going to be enjoyed in the casino? Are fans going to sit in the cold and watch a loosing Browns game or in the sports betting parlor in the casino where they can watch every game that is being played, for free. Are we going to watch another couple of years of the Tribe (next season will be a real test). That leaves the Cav's. They win, they get the fan money. They are owned by the guy that will own most of the casino. So, if something has to go because we ran out of sports dollars what will it be? My guess, it will be the Browns. Going on 10 years and still a looser. I don't know about you but the boo's I heard from the fans yesterday were loud and clear. If I was the owner and had 600 million or so invested I might be thinking about bailing. Good luck.
The Browns are just awful, but firing Mangini and benching Anderson aren't going to solve any of the real problems with the team.
The real problem is Randy Lerner, the absentee owner of the Browns. He is more concerned about his Aston Villa soccer team in the UK than he is about the Browns. If Mangini can't turn the Browns around, Lerner should keep his word and sell the team.
The sad part of all of this is, if you talk to any Aston Villa fan they talk about Lerner like he is the second coming of Christ. They talk about how he has resurrected the entire franchise and rejuvenated the fan base. You talk to a Browns fan and all we want him to do is sell to someone who cares.
So what I think we all need to say to Randy is this -- Sell the team. You don't like the Browns. You never wanted the Browns. No one would be upset. It was your dad's team. We all know.
Crack on Modell if you want, but he has a Superbowl ring, a real football team and he ran the Brown's francise better than anyone has since he left.
@Socialist: Modell's SuperBowl ring came after he sold control in the Ravens.
I have to say I agree with the first person who commented on this story. You can't keep changing coaches. This team needs some stability and to work harder than they ever have before. Each and every time they bring in a new coach they start all over. This is going to take a while. YES I KNOW IT HAS BEEN SAID OH A HUNDRED TIMES????
The short answer right now is, firing Mangini will do nothing. Except start the search for a new coach. Top prospects like Cowher adn Shannahan will not come here. They can have their pick of jobs, why would they want to come to this mess.
Yes a guy like Mike Singletary would be nice, but his success is pretty limited so far, he could still flop. He had very little coaching experience before that.
Part of the solution may be for the fans to express their displeasure with the team. Stop buying or renewing tickets. Stop buying merchandise. Maybe even stop watching the game (although that really doesn't affect the team's pockets much).
Getting Lerner to sell the team would be nice, but there's no gaurantee the next guy cares more. A new GM in the mold of what Parcells has done in MIA would be a start. Then let him hire his staff. Take the owner out of the equation, have football minds running the team.
As it stands now, I'm looking forward to that bye week Nov 8, at least the Browns won't be embarrassing themselves that weekend.
Socialist and you believed Art when he said he was not moving the team to Baltimore to right? Art could not run a business and lost money left and right - that's why the team ended up in Baltimore so someone could bail his A___ out and then he sold his control to someone else and then won the Super Bowl. Any true Browns fan cannot forgive Art for what he did to this team. With that being said the team we have is what was given to us by the NFL when we came back - we didn't have enough time to put a team together - we threw poor Tim Couch out there to be man handled and ruined him as a player. We have had nothing but a revolving door for Coaches and players. If this years draft, the Browns don't get it right - they never will. We need a franchise QB and neither Quinn or Anderson is the answer. I'm a diehard fan and it is getting very difficult to watch this team. But we won't become Steeler fans like some many have because the Browns are losing and the Steelers are winning. This team needs direction and leadership. Maybe Bernie can help with this.
If the Browns go to L.A., then by default we have to become Steeler's fans as it's the next closest pro team.
At this point, that doesn't sound too bad.
I'm not into conspiracy theories but running a team into the ground does make it far easier to move. And the L.A. market definitely shows more promise.
College and High School football should thank the Browns for driving so many disgruntled fans into their ranks.
What it is time to admit is that we are not Jets,Patriots,Giants etc.As soon as one coach is smart enough to realize that this is the Cleveland Browns and build a team that is the smashmouth, meanass that nobobody wants to play outta fear, then the rest will come.We need hitters and runblockers not players from a team that sucked any way.Start oldschool then try the wrinkles. Loses in low scoring battles shows improvement ,not this People arent even afraid of the dogpound anymore and thats just sad!
Romeo Crennel wasn't the best head coach, but he's a good coach. He was a defense coach. He always had to deal with personality clashes but he kept the functioning, and the players wanted to play for him. The games were at best entertaining, because we competed in every game. Now the games aren't worth watching. The defense don't tackle and the offense don't move the ball. I hope we can get a quarterback like Penn State's Clark and some defensive players that can tackle.
Mangini is over his head.
That would be Aston Villa!
Well at least there are a few people who agree with me. Get some REAL PROFESSIONALS running the football operations. Mangina, you get to coach only for now, prove yourself. Get a GM who's a real football guy Charlie Casserly ring a bell. Houston fans thought he was nuts, guess what he was right. This is the guy to run to operations, and as far as I can tell, he's not working for a football team right now. Wake up LERNER! Hear's the guy to straighten out this ship. Build the Browns into a winner, then you can sell them to a person who really loves football - AMERICAN style.
Doesn't the fat ballboy/coach look lost watching on the sidelines?
Firing Mangini right now is just acting on emotions, rather then any rational thinking.
You don’t fire a first year starting Head Coach after only seven games, good or bad.
Thank You PAT.. Finally a reporter states the obvious..It's no revolving door you try til you get it right. Let's be real Mangini is the GM for the browns too, Koukinis, didn't draft those guys, or build the Jet's team up, and send us there scrubs. GRUDEN, SHANNAHAN, HOLMGREN, guys who have Won SuperBowls..No more Bellechek Rejects..Were wishing on a star with that..So what we have 11 draft picks next year, there all in the later rounds, and would only be Special Teamers if they even make the team..I'm not a Brady Quinn fan, but I'd like to see him againse a defense other than Baltimore, Denver, or Minnesota, Anderson has played the weakest defenses and we couldn't trade him for a Kicker...
Oldermangrump
Would it make more sense to support the Bengals?
We would want to support an Ohio team first wouldn't we?
Mike wants to give Mangini the length of his contract before firing him???? Are you out of your mind? This clown should have been gone after last week. It's unfathomable that anyone could have done this horrible of a job in 10 months. He's bungled the QB situation, the draft and the addition of 10 Jets the Jets didn't want. The players don't buy his dictator BS and neither do the fans. This team is worse than the 99' team, HELL, I think they BEAT Pittsburgh once. This team won't come within 60 points of doing that.
Side note to Neighbor2: don't drink the bongwater dude.
One thing is for sure. This franchise ruins NFL Careers.
Charlie Frye-Tim Couch- Butch Davis- Romeo Crennel
and maybe Derrick Anderson and Brady Quinn before its over.
I agree with others. The Browns future doesn't hold much promise for Bellichick weaned coaches running the show.
I dont have the answers,(I am not paid to) but
there is something fundamentally wrong with a team that is now been in place for 10 years and we are
no farther along in players or staff then the 1999 replacement team.
As a Jets fan, I can tell you from firsthand experience that Mangini was a BAD hire. He's the reason the Jets imploded down the stretch last year, not Brett Favre. He merely set Favre up to be a conveinent scapegoat, hence the reason Woody Johnson and Mike Tannenbaum gave him the axe.
The Browns seem hellbent on trying to get their own Belichick to make up for the one they let get away a decade and change ago. Newsflash kids, it's not happening. Your franchise has been back since 1999 and it only has THREE (that's right, 3, which might be the win total for this season) 1st round picks on its present roster that it drafted on Draft Day.
Thomas is going to be one of the best LTs in the game, jury's still out on Mack. They've all but ruined the confidence of Brady Quinn. When will folks realize that Derek Anderson was at best, a flash in the pan? He had his one year, went to the All-Star Game Almost Nobody Wants To Play In and that was it. I mean, what is this organization thinking getting rid of Winslow and Edwards? They're overrating these QBs just a touch much and honestly, I think the only hope for Quinn is for him to go elsewhere.
If not for the existence of Oakland, Detroit and Kansas City...Cleveland would be the most talked about dysfunctional franchise in the NFL. So if ya fire Mangini, who do you bring in to replace him? Fans have to be realistic enough in their expectations to realize this roster is a LONG WAY from being competitive. Some pieces have to be coached up, others have to be brought back. Drafting another QB is basically admitting to the world, "our GM not only rides to short bus to work, he's driving it". Get a coach in there who's committed to tailoring the offense around Quinn and make it happen. Snap out of this dream that you've got talent for the 3-4. Ya don't. Go 4-3 and rebuild this defense.
Isn't it sad when you realize how much we miss the Tim Couch days?
I have been a Browns fan since the days of Paul Warfield. I have never seen such disarray and lack of leadership. I was at the game on Sunday and Anderson showed no leadership at all. His passes were off the short, off the mark, and not very accurate and he has no one to blame but himself. I will always continue to be a Browns fan because I know that all things come to an end and this shall pass. I just hope it happens soon.
Dear Randy i have a nickle 2.98 and a ham samich ill let ya keep all the profits if ya let me be the defacto owner ,Pat you will be my PR Guy, Terry P will be my community outreach GURU my fee nothin but the perks that come with the job the outcome PRICELESS WERE GOING TO OVERTIME BABY ERR THE SUPER BOWL BABY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
"Time for Browns to admit mistake with Mangini"
Wouldn't that be tantamount to Shapiro admitting that letting go of Sabathia and Lee was a mistake??
Oh yeah, Wednesday night, check out the Game #1 matchup in the World Series! Lee vs. Sabathia! ROFLMFAO!
Bend over, NEO! GO CAVS!
:0(
It's baffling - no matter who the owner, coach, quarterback, etc., the Browns can't score. In the distant past, the philosophy was that defense was the key to the game. In a half century of watching football, it's clear to me that the key to the game is scoring more points than the other guys. Is it really that hard to find players and a coach that can put an offense on the field?
I'll say till I am blue in the face: Magini must be fired. Kokinis with him as they are joined at the hip/ bad idea to begin with hiring two friends -ya, like Kokinis would fire mangini?/and Daboll the diaster. Anything short of this is to have even more of a disaster next year and beyond. This is a beyond poor coaching – it's sick!
Mangini , Kokinis and Daboll should be fired. Quinn should start and either prove himself or not. The season should not be wasted any longer with this DA madness. Anyone who goes along with this nonsense from Mangini and Daboll are the kind of people who just stand there and watch when someone is being stabbed to death

Did you see the end to the Steeler game against Favre? Man, it's fun watching a REAL football team. If the Browns would just leave Cleveland, we would have a REAL team just 100 or so miles away. LEAVE CLEVELAND FOR GOOD BROWNS!!!! GET OUT!!
I'm glad I'm not a Browns fan. You people want the QB/coach's head whenever they lose. I was curious why someone not good enough for the NYJ was the "man" for Cleveland. Was it the price????
I'll say this much; anyone who has jumped ship to the Squeeler bandwagon is a joke & never was a REAL Browns fan to begin with! As much as I hate watching this garbage, I've been a die-hard fan for 50 years & that won't end until my time is up! This will get turned around eventually, I just hope I live long enough to see it!
I AGREE WITH YOU AND I HOPE THE OWNERS AND THE FANS DO TOO ERIC MANGINI IS NOT A COACH HE,S PROVEN THAT BUT THE SAD PART OF IT ALL WE NOT ONLY GOT HIM IN CLEVELAND BUT THE LOSERS FROM HIS PRIVIOUS TEAM TOO AND,LOST ARE FIRST ROUND PICK AND MORE TO HIS OLD TEAM, AT LEAST THEY THEY WERE SMARTER THEN US THEY GOT RID OF HIM LIKE WE SHOULD IN A HART BEAT. WAKE UP CLEVELAND GET HIM OUT OF THERE AND THE JUNK HE DRAGED DOWN HERE WITH HIM.
It would be different if this team played like they at least wanted to win. No heart , no passion , they just want out. The other bad teams at least been playing hard & showing signs of life. For those of you who think Mangini deserves to keep his job, just look at the total lack of effort he has produced. It won't be getting better next year either, agents are telling their free agents not to deal with the Browns because of Lerner & Mangini. The Jets will though for a place to dump their trash. They all must go , the sooner the better!
This from the guys who fired Shottenheimer, Bellicheck, and let Cower go. How'd that all work out for ya? Keep the revolving door going and we'll keep going in circles.
It's all about money. Dead cap money, getting rid of bad contracts, overpriced free agents, etc. It's getting this team in a position to sign draft picks and FA's to get this team back to respectability. There's a reason the Bill Cowhers of the world wouldn't come near this situation with a 10 ft stick.
JerseyDiablo,
Yeah, look at Favre's stats over the last five games and get back to us on that claim.
Pat,
Boo hoo. You're still mad at the Browns because of how you left and because of your former employee friends that were let go with the new regime. You're transparent and you're the worst beat reporter in NEO, which is saying a lot since Grossi is horrendous.
If you aren't a Browns fan, leave and shut your mouth. Go root for Pittsburgh, but just don't get back on the bandwagon when things turn around. Only people with no souls change allegiances because of down years. God help your parents if they ever become incapacitated, because their spineless kids sure won't be able to cope and refrain from pulling the plug.
What is wrong with you, GOPHater? I will NEVER root for the Steelers, even if the Browns left the NFL forever. They're the enemy. I'm SO SICK of seeing yellow and black everywhere. Stupid bandwagon fans.
AsOctoberFalls,
Doesn't his username tell you he likes to follow the crowd? No surprise to me.
Amen to the GOPHATER bashing.
But be careful Remember he worked with Colin Powell
during the Bush Administration on Secret Secret Government stuff
I like the loyalty the posts show on this subject.
No matter what no one likes a turncoat
The ones screaming get the browns out of Cleveland
will be the first ones crying hysterically if it were to happen.
Right now Sunday afternoon Browns games allow most of us to catch up on some much needed Yard Work.
I know someday we will again be able to say the H-E-L-L with the yard, the Browns are Playing today
For all of the people that would like to keep Mangini: You are seriously in need of help. You want him to stay until the end of his contract and for what so that next season you call look dumbfound and state "we should have gotten ridden of him in December". At this point anyone would do a better job. He has brought in substandard ex-jet players that have accomplished nothing. As it has been said before, does facts mean anything? Are you not sick and tired of the foolishness that is going on week after week? Players he should be playing he won't play and for some odd reason when he is asked questions in his press conferences, those questions are never asked of him. Fire him and all of the worthless individuals with him. He kept Jamal Lewis and for what so the fans can watch start up like the first ford car. Seriously, get rid of him and get someone, anyone that knows how football is suppose to be played and can motivate not intimidate the players. The last good game was when they played the bengals. Looking at the rest of the schedule, it won't be pretty. They may not go down in history like Detroit but they will go down as having a 1-15 record. Get a freaking a grip.
lovechild68,
Who would you have brought in place of the ex-Jets? You act like the Browns can turn over their entire roster in a year and be Super Bowl contenders? The team is lacking in talent. I know it's taboo to say this, but it will take time. That's what happens when you continually blow draft picks.
Does this draft history scream success to you? Even when the Browns cut these guys, no other NFL team bother to pick them up. What does that tell you?
http://www.clevelandbrowns.com/team/history/present.php
Don't worry folks you can watch two ex Indians start in pitching in the World Series against each other tomorrow night. Typical Cleveland teams, always get rid of the best and say it is so you can rebuild. Then watch those that leave, go on to be super.
Bill B, Bill C, Marty S, Charlie M - Oh and I could go on and on.
i don't like Mangini, but this article is short sighted.
#1. browns have the least amount of talent in the nfl
#2. what do you expect ANY coach to do with that in less than 1/2 of the season
#3. look at the example of jimmy johnson - 1-15 in his first year and slowly built the Cowboys into a winner 3 years later.
I'd rather have Cower, Shannahan, etc... but the lack of talent is staggering. Only Thomas, Jackson, Rodgers and perhaps 2-3 other players are deserving of being starters.
OMG says "If the Browns go to L.A., then by default we have to become Steeler's fans as it's the next closest pro team."
That is the stupidest thing I have ever heard. First, real Browns fans don't become Steeler fans. The two teams are bitter hated rivals.
Second, what does the proximity of the team matter? You never heard of people moving somewhere and still being a fan of their former home team?
If the Browns were to move, I'd still watch the NFL. In time I'd probably find another favorite team. And it couldn't be one I've hated most of my life (so no Steelers, Cowboys or Patriots).
PS Where you been, we all thought you died or something. Plus I thought you already were a Steeler fan?
play brady!!!!!!
Another crash and burn season for the Browns, year in year out same old Browns,That's why I DO NOT I REPEAT DO NOT get the NFL Ticket anymore. I got tired of throwing my money away. The Motto in Cleveland is wait till next year..please...
Play Brady-what do we have to loose
#1. browns have the least amount of talent in the nfl
#2. what do you expect ANY coach to do with that in less than 1/2 of the season
#3. look at the example of jimmy johnson - 1-15 in his first year and slowly built the Cowboys into a winner 3 years later.
1. mangini picked almost half the roster. think they are untalented? blame him.
2. i expect any coach to at least play respectable football. mangini hasn't even come close.
3. another idiotic comparison. jimmy johnson wasn't fresh off a failure continuing the same course as his last sinking ship.
FIRE ERIC MANGINI
Steve,
That's an imposter, not the real OMG.
Typical cleveland team....hire a fired coach within weeks of being fired!!!!!!!!!
.
How do we organize a home boycott? Get smart Browns fans - stay home!
Original Jason and Hubbs....
No one understands the time it takes to build a winning NFl franchise from a complete pile of rubble. They will always be led by fools like Pat who think the Browns actually have enough talent to make waves this season.
I have stopped trying to convince the nay-sayers that you have to give a coach more than a season but they're stubborn.
The only team that fires coaches after one year is Oakland... let's keep it that way.
LOVE THIS.....BRING IN THE CLOWNS LED BY THE DOUGH BOY!!!!
GO TO LA PLEASE!!!!!!!!!!!
TONY Z....IF YOU THINK FOR ONE SECOND ANYTHING IS GOING TO GET BETTER HERE...YOUR MISTAKEN BIG TIME..
1. mangini picked almost half the roster. think they are untalented? blame him.
HE MAY HAVE PICKED ALMOST 1/2 THE ROSTER BUT THE KEY QUESTION IS WHAT POOL DID HE HAVE TO PICK FROM?
ANSWER: LEFT OVERS FROM 08-09 BROWNS, WEAK FREE AGENT POOL, THE DRAFT AND EX-JETS VIA TRADE. IN SUM, THERE WAS NOTHING TO PULL FROM - I DON'T CARE IF IT WAS THE GREATEST COACH IN THE WORLD, THE TALENT WASN'T AVAILABLE.
2. i expect any coach to at least play respectable football. mangini hasn't even come close.
WELL, NOBODY CAN EVER ACCUSE YOU OF NOT BEING IDEALISTIC, I GUESS, BUT IF YOU GO TO A GUN WAR WITH A KNIFE, YOU WILL LOSE 9 OUT OF 10 TIMES.
3. another idiotic comparison. jimmy johnson wasn't fresh off a failure continuing the same course as his last sinking ship.
I'D NEVER TELL YOU YOUR OBSERVATIONS ARE 'IDIOTIC' EVEN IF THEY WERE BUT MY COMPARISON IS ENTIRELY IN LINE. #1. WHILE THE COACHES CAME FROM DIFFERENT SITUATIONS, THE PARALLEL IS THAT NEITHER HAD ANY TALENT ON THEIR ROSTER IN THEIR 1ST YEAR OF COACHING. #2. I'D BE THRILLED IF MANGINI "CONTINUED THE SAME COURSE" - THE JETS WERE 9-7 LAST YEAR...I DON'T KNOW WHEN THE NEXT TIME WE'LL SNIFF THAT MARK WILL BE.
You want to fire him, that's your prerogative, but it is entirely unfair to can a guy after 7 games when he is doesn't have the tools to succeed. LOOK AT JEFF FISHER IN TENNESSEE...I'd LOVE HIM IN C-TOWN.
Like I said before, I welcome Cower, Shannahan but they wouldn't touch this job with a 10ft pole, because there are no assets here.
pat., youhave got to be kidding me.this is your worst artical ever.i thought you knew a little bit about a little bit,ive lost (almost)all respect for your knowledge in pro football.its the owner,by the way who helped art leave in the first place, who changes coaches ever couple of years to put the blame on anyone but himself(modells fought for moving not his).no coach in his right mind would work for him.GO BROWNS! and take the indians with you!
sorry, i forgot al died...randy blows too!
sorry, i forgot that al died... randy bites it too
Its a good thing an anonymous person criticized me for things that I didn't even say.
I didn't say they would get better, I did say you have to give a coach in the NFL more time to evaluate them.
Next time put words into someone else's mouth.
Coward.
The Real Cleveland Browns moved to Baltimore and they changed their name to the Ravens!
This winless team on Ohio shores of Lake Erie can call themselves what ever they want.
How about the Cleveland Losers?
I told every one that it was a very big mistake to hire by the lake
@ A different TonyZ
That was my point also in an earlier post. Any point in asking for Mangini to get the AXE at this point is based purely on emotion.
That is why one doesn't react to a situation at the moment but takes the time to walk away and cool off and think rationally.
Its also why the fans don't make Pro Sport Franchise decisions.
Mangini may or may not be a good coach. He is or is not a good fit in Cleveland, but seven games into a season, one cannot be objective as to this being a good or bad choice for coach.
Belichicks Browns were terrible when he was here,
and everybody was calling for his head on a platter.
Look what became of Belichicks Patriots.
I am not saying Mangini is a Belichick, but as you also pointed out it's to early to be making decisions on the Head Coach.
What I am surprised about is a Sports writer thinking its time to get rid of the Coach.
Paid Sports writers are so supposed to be more experienced and objective when it comes to these type of things.
Never mind Boomer Esiason's comments or some irrelevant rock magazine or whatever, these people
are selling entertainment,in fact I don't know what real purpose Sunday Pregame shows serve but to entertain and employ retired ball players.
Their comments, questions and answers are rehearsed and staged hours before any game even plays out.
Mangini gets two seasons period, like it or not, only then can we evaluate fully his performance.
My bet is he doesn't make it,but at least I wont be jumping the gun.
DS,
Kudos for a rational/realistic opinion. On a side note, I think he will get a full 2 seasons. I'm not sure about a 3rd, but 2 is a given, IMO. (lerner would be admitting mangini was a mistake, lerner has to pay him whether he stays or goes and finally who in the world would replace him?)
What we all have to remember is that if for no other reason, Mangini needs to stay to "help" the franchise by amassing talent - no decent coach will come here with the talent we have now. With a decent draft and one or two solid FA signings, the Browns could actually have 10 or so decent players by the end of next season.
"Time for Browns to admit mistake with Mangini" AMEN!!!!!!!!!!
Maybe our Great Great Great Great Grand children will see the Browns win a Playoff/SuperBowl..LOL...
fire the coach every week! you guys are funny.
Can we call rentacoach?
Fire McManamon.
McManamon must go.
Dawg Pound Mike is a Jock Sniffer.
If rentacoach ever becomes a business it will be some Browns fan or sportswriter who will own the first franchise.
hes personally hired a lot of mistakes.
but he said he wouldnt do that again, AND THEN DID!
Okay, so I watch the Browns when they are on tv... And what do I see?
First, the quarterbacks aren't the problem. The problem there is the lack of protection.
And then when they are getting the protection, what I see is guys that can't catch the ball when it hits them on the hands.
I would love to see Mangini get a chance, it is only his first season here.
What I would really like to see is these guys practicing the basics of football and a real desire to be there because they love the game and love to play. Some of these guys really just come across is 'I'm here, I'm a star'
The one high point each week? Josh Cribbs and special teams. I give these guys credit for being a high point of the game each week.
Sell the team to Art Modell. He can make them winners! Art's formula for a Superbowl Victory:
Different town
different name
different fans (and no brown out)

This is too good. Was this article published again to disgrace Pat McManamon? Many should be embarassed by their comments, their rush to judgement. The guy from Jersey who uses an F-Bomb for his name and was telling everyone how mangini was responsible for the Jets collapse last year was particularly funny, as they were like 5-1 when he wrote his absurd remarks, what is their rcord without Mangini now? Now who's fault is their collapse? This is just too good.
