Boston Red Sox closer Joel Hanrahan is contemplating season-ending surgery after being examined by orthopedist James Andrews.
Boston manager John Farrell says an MRI taken Friday showed flexor tendon damage in the right forearm. Farrell says if surgery is performed, Hanrahan would miss the rest of the season.
He also says if Hanrahan has an operation, the ulnar collateral ligament in the elbow would be checked to see if Tommy John surgery is necessary. But Farrell said ligament damage has been ruled out “to a certain extent.”
Hanrahan went on the 15-day disabled list Tuesday and was transferred to the 60-day list Thursday.
The Red Sox acquired Hanrahan in a trade with the Pittsburgh Pirates last Dec. 26. He is 0-1 with a 9.82 ERA and four saves in six opportunities.
