The Atlanta Braves purchased right-hander Freddy Garcia from the Baltimore Orioles on Friday, a move that could ultimately provide depth for a team that holds a commanding lead in the NL East.
The 36-year-old Garcia was 3-5 with a 5.77 ERA in 11 appearances for the Orioles before being assigned to Triple-A Norfolk in late June. He made 13 starts for the Tides, going 8-3 with a 2.84 ERA.
The Braves placed Garcia with their Triple-A team at Gwinnett, though he could be recalled when the rosters expand for the final month of the season.
Garcia probably wasn’t going to be recalled by the Orioles in September, so they sent him to a place where he had a shot at playing in the majors.
Terms of the deal weren’t released.
Athletics bring back Suzuki
The Oakland Athletics acquired catcher Kurt Suzuki from the Washington Nationals to boost their injury situation at the position, bringing back a former fan favorite just more than a year after trading him away.
The A’s are sending Class-A starter Dakota Bacus to the Nationals in the swap, while Washington is paying $995,000 to Oakland as its portion remaining on Suzuki’s 2013 salary. He left Chicago where the Nationals were playing and was set to join Oakland in Baltimore.
Suzuki, selected by the A’s in the second round of the 2004 amateur draft, spent parts of the past two seasons with Washington after six in Oakland. He’s batting .222 with three homers and 25 RBI in 79 games.
Rays pick up outfielder
The Tampa Bay Rays acquired outfielder David DeJesus from Washington just four days after the Nationals picked him up from the Chicago Cubs. Washington will receive a player or cash considerations in the deal. DeJesus was acquired by the Nationals on Monday and played in three road games with Washington this week. In 87 games overall this season, DeJesus is batting .247 with six home runs and 27 RBI. The Nationals have recalled catcher Jhonatan Solano and left-hander Xavier Cedeno.
