In a sign of confidence Derek Jeter will return to shortstop next season, the New York Yankees agreed Friday to a $12 million, one-year deal with their captain.
Jeter, who turns 40 next June, was limited to 17 games this year after breaking his ankle in the 2012 playoffs. He spent four stints on the disabled list in the most frustrating season of his 19-year career.
“This entire season has been a nightmare for me physically,” he said after the Yankees said his season was over. “I truly believe with a full offseason, working out and getting my strength back that I can get back to doing what I always have.”
This deal, agreed to Friday, was achieved without the rancor surrounding Jeter’s previous contract.
Red Sox keep Lester
The World Series champion Boston Red Sox exercised their $13 million option on left-hander Jon Lester, who was the starting and winning pitcher twice during Boston’s six-game victory over the St. Louis Cardinals. The 29-year-old was 15-8 with a 3.75 ERA in the regular season.
Cubs interview Ausmus
A source says the Chicago Cubs are interviewing former catcher Brad Ausmus for their manager’s job. The source spoke Friday on the condition of anonymity because the search is to be confidential.
Ausmus works in San Diego’s front office as a special assistant to the general manager. Ausmus played in the majors from 1993-2010.
